Create parking lots; curb use of mobile while driving: Suharwardy | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Sept 10: A meeting of Departmental Related Standing Committee (DRSC)-II of State Legislative Council was convened here today at Engineers Institute, Gandhi Nagar under the chairmanship of Khalid Najeeb Suharwardy in which threadbare discussions were held on the functioning of the transport department and smooth traffic movement in Jammu city. Member Legislative Council, Jugal Kishore and Javed Ahmad Rana attended the meeting as members of the committee. Speaking on the occasion, the Chairman enquired from the transport authorities about the steps taken for the regulating traffic jams in Jammu city, the winter capital of the state. He said that prevalence of accident rate is high in the state for which he asked the concerned authorities to take measures for strict enforcement of traffic rules and augmenting transport system in the state. Suhrawardy said that Jammu is facing lacks proper parking spaces and creation of parking lots is need of the hour.Besides, he along with others members of the Committee laid stress on curbing the use of mobile phone while driving especially among youth. Speaking on the occasion, MLC Jugal Kishore said that steps need to be taken to streamline the traffic flow in Katra where a large number of commercial and private vehicles ferry passengers to and fro Jammu and other parts of the state. It was said that installing of traffic signals at various crucial junctions has eased traffic jams and measures should be taken so that they are installed at all vital points. It was also discussed that registration of vehicles be checked properly and overloading, teenage driving, rash driving should also be curbed effectively besides cameras and speed breakers be installed on main routes. The transport facilities being provided to tourists, yatries came also under discussion and it was desired that metering of auto Rikshaws and other modes of transport be pursued for preventing over charging. Besides the committee also called upon the concerned officers to ensure that the seats be reserved for women handicap and senior citizens in buses and matadors. The committee took serious view of the shopping malls, banquet halls, hotels and showrooms who were bound to construct parking space for the vehicles have violated these norms and the concerned authorities were asked that strict action should be taken against the violators. The chairman also said that people should cooperate for ensuring that traffic rules are followed so that the traffic mishaps are avoided. The officers of the transport and traffic department briefed the committee about the measures taken by the concerned departments for streamline the traffic system in the state. Among others, Jammu Municipal Corporation Commissioner KL Khajuria, SSP Traffic Manmohan Singh, RTO Jammu Virinder Slathia and others attended the meeting. |
