Will authorities also book NC leaders and others on charges of sedition? | IAC Activist Trivedi In Jail | | Rustam JAMMU, Sept 10: The Maharashtra police on Sunday booked an India Against Corruption (IAC) activist Aseem Trivedi on charges of sedition and sent to jail. The charge against this cartoonist was that he depicted one national symbol in a wrong way. He did so to expose the corrupt elements in the Congress-led UPA Government. The complaint against Aseem was filed by a local Congress leader, who also happens to be a lawyer. Aseem is a well-known cartoonist. He belongs to a Kanpur family which played role during the Indian freedom struggle. Those who have opposed the arrest of Aseem and criticized the political establishment have said that the Congress-led UPA Government is trying to impose restriction on the freedom of expression and that it is using archaic laws to gag dissent. Remember, Aseem was arrested under a law which was introduced by the British Government immediately after the 1857 revolt to crush and eradicate freedom fighters. Now that the authorities have booked Aseem on charges of sedition, will they also book those on charges of sedition who used the floor of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly and questioned the very accession of the State with India? Will the authorities also book those in the Union Council of Ministers, including former Home Minister and presently Finance Minister and Foreign Minister, who had, instead of taking action against those who had challenged the State's accession, sided with them saying what the Kashmiri leader said was based on a hard fact? Will the authorities also book those on charges of sedition who have been working for a dispensation under which the Indian borders and the Line of Control would be rendered irrelevant or porous and the Indian Army and all the Central laws would be withdrawn from the State? Will the authorities also book those in Kashmir who have been saying on a daily basis that Jammu and Kashmir is a disputed territory and Pakistan is a party to the dispute? Will they also book and arrest those who have been dividing society on the basis of caste and religion for the sake of vote-bank politics? No, the authorities will not book and arrest those who have been openly working against the territorial integrity of India and undermining Indian sovereignty. No, the authorities will not book and arrest those who have been looting and plundering the Indian exchequer and manipulating New Delhi to establish their control over and exploit the natural resources of India, including coal. They will book and arrest only those who have unleashed a relentless campaign against the corrupt; against those who are undermining the importance of Constitutional institutions, including the Supreme Court, Comptroller and Auditor-General and Election Commission. This is the state of affairs that has gripped the Indian polity. It's a sorry state of affairs. |
