Baglihar, complete by Dec 31: Jora
2/9/2007 11:06:45 PM
JAMMU, FEB 9
The Jammu and Kashmir government today said the construction of Baglihar project on Chenab river will be completed by December 31.
This was conveyed to the Legislative Council by state Power Minister Nawang Rigzin Jora who also said the Swiss arbitrator appointed to resolve differences between India and Pakistan would present his final report on the 450 MW hydroelectric power project on February 12.
The Minister was replying to discussions on the losses incurred on the project and the objections raised by Pakistan in the construction and functioning of the Power Development Department.
He said the project, which is expected to cost Rs 3810 crore, has not been able to achieve financial closure upto 2003.
"Owing to non achievement of the financial closure, there was delay in land acquisition and had led to labour problems. The project could not be completed by the initially scheduled date of December 31, 2004," Jora said.
Failing to resolve differences with India over the project, Pakistan had referred the matter to the World Bank which had appointed an expert, he said.
