| Governor lauds linguistic diversity, releases book | | | JAMMU | FEB 10 Governor Lt. Gen (Retd) S K Sinha today highlighted the linguistic diversity of India, saying that the three-language formula of the first Prime Minister Pt Jawaharlal Nehru is ideally suited for the country. Releasing ‘Manas Manthan’ a poetic work by poetess Shahshi Padha at K L Saigal auditorium here, the Governor said that the three language formulla envisages promotion of regional languages along side the national language of Hindi and internationally used English. ‘We have to communicate with the world in English and to benefit from knowledge explosion through this language’, the Governor said, adding that due to rich human resource and art of adaptability, India has made its presence felt in the world and is emerging as a global economic power. General Sinha hailed the intellectual contribution in promoting Hindi and noted with satisfaction that writers like Shashi Padha were spreading this sweet language across the seas. He also recalled the first ever speech delivered in Hindi by the former Prime Minister, Mr Atal Behari Vajpayee, himself a poet. On languages, he said that the first secessionist movement in India emerged on language conflict but it was sagaciously overcome. Those states pleading against the use of English remained somehow backwards and the agitation against Hindi in some states was also short lived. ‘We overcame our problems and are taking much pride in linguistic diversity of the country. On the contrary the neighbouring country failed in doing so’, he added. Referring to the book he released, the Governor said that it had been penned by daughter of the soil, which is known for its music, literature, temples and warriors. He lauded the rich heritage of Jammu and said that it has produced stalwarts like Saigal. In his presidential address, Mr Ved Bhasin opined that English should not be promoted at the cost of national and regional languages. In Jammu and Kashmir, he advocated four language formula- English, Hindi, Urdu and the languages of different regions like Kashmiri, Dogri etc. Mr Bhasin congratulated Shashi Padha on her literary contribution said and left it to critics for judging her work. Secretary, Academy of Art, Culture and Languages, Dr Rafiq Masoodi in his lucid Hindi speech spoke about the richness of various languages. He said that it is endeavour of the Academy to encourage the local writers in various ways enabling them to meet the challenges at national level. Mr Anand Lehar also spoke on the occasion while noted poet Yash Sharma presented vote of thanks. Yash Pal Yash conducted the proceedings. On the occasion, Shashi Padha rendered her two poems; Sham Sajan presented two composed poems of the poetess while Dr Raj Kumar gave critical analysis of the book. The book release function was jointly organised by Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages, Nami Dogri Sanastha and The Art Foundation. Prominent among those present included GOC, Maj Gen Sanjeev Lomba, Maj Gen (Retd) K C Padha, Brig (Retd) K S Kotwal, Director Rajya Sainik Board, Prof Ved Ghai, Prof Reeta Jeendran besides writers and intellectuals. |
