| 1000 EGCs to be upgraded to Primary School level | | Peerzada directs creation of infrastructure for physically challenged children | | JAMMU, FEBRUARY 10 One Thousand Education Guarantee Centers completing two years of successful functioning are slated to be upgraded to Primary Schools during the current financial year. The information was given at the Governing Body Meeting of Sarve Shiksha Abhiyan with Minister for Education Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed in the Chair. Principal Secretary Planning Mr. S S Kapoor, Secretary Education Khazir Mohammad Wani, Director School Education Jammu Mr. D K Viad and Director School Education Kashmir Mr. Mohammad Rafi and other senior officers attended the meeting. Reviewing the progress registered under the scheme so far, the meeting stressed for setting up more ECG centres to fill the gaps and at the same consolidating of infrastructure. The member also articulated the need for the rationalization of existing centres. The meeting disclosed that 1517 Primary schools and 79 Middle buildings were constructed during the current year while work on more 3786 primary school and 668 Middle school buildings was being taken up under the Rs 354 crore works plan approved for the current year. Besides 5522 new classrooms were also constructed at various existing institutions. Issuing various directions, Minister called for developing infrastructure facilities for physically challenged at all district head quarters. A committee was constituted to recommend the suggestions for developing such infrastructure. It was informed that presently out of total 38000 Physically challenged children, 22000 are enrolled in regular schools across the state. It was felt that to ensure enrollment of all such children some more steps should be taken. Stressing the need for containing dropouts, Minister said that special attention should be paid to population more prone to such trend, while referring to the Scheduled Tribe population who resort to seasonal migration in search of fodder for their cattle. He also directed for providing upper primary education facilities to these migrating students. The Meeting, however, informed that a survey report is awaited and expected to come in the end of the current month with regard to students of this category. It was said that adequate measures would be taken to provide them upper elementary education facilities, besides checking the drop out rate at Primary level. About meeting the targets set under the scheme, Minster said that while the option opening of new schools at primary and elementary level on need basis would be kept open, at the same stress would be laid on the consolidation of infrastructure as well.
