| Protests against ‘custodial killings’ continue | | | SRINAGAR | FEB 10 (PTI) Protests against fake encounters continued in Jammu and Kashmir today despite the government's announcement yesterday that it will probe into cases of custodial disappearances and human rights violation in the state since 1990.
Alleging the fake encounters were stage-managed by the special operations group of Jammu and Kashmir Police, relatives of the missing people reiterated their demand for a probe into the disappearance of around 10,000 people since 1989.
"We demand a probe under Commissions of Enquiry Act headed by a judge and acceptable to the families of the 10,000 disappeared people," spokesman of Association of Parents of Disappeared Persons (APDP) told reporters here.
He said the state government in the past had announced it would empower the State Human Rights Commission but the panel proved to be an eyewash.
Referring to Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad's announcement of a probe into the disappearances, he said it is another delaying tactic and the government is not serious in addressing the issue of enforced involuntary disappearances as well as repealing the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act.
He said enforced involuntary disappearances have become a public issue for the first time in the state because of the recent expose of death of five civilians who "were first disappeared and then killed in fake encounters".
He said mass graves have been found across the state where unidentified bodies are lying. (
