Sri Lanka snatch victory from the jaws of defeat
2/11/2007 10:55:51 PM
Rajkot, Feb 11
Sri Lanka win by five runs as the Indian tail-enders let go of the match in the last few overs of the second ODI in Rajkot on Sunday. Sri Lanka lead series by 1-0.
Indian lower order made much of a modest 258-run target as some good knocks by Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar go in vain.
Dhoni followed Harbhajan to leave the battle in the hands of the bowlers.
Prior to Harbhajan, the man to be dismissed was Karthik (31) off Malinga's delivery. Bandara packed off Virender Sehwag for 19.
The two masters - Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar - hit superb shots to complete their half-centuries each before putting the hosts back to the top. But the partnership could not last too long as Lankan spinner Bandara dismissed the little master at 54, while Malinga trapped Ganguly (62).
Seamer Farveez Mahroof gave the Sri Lankans an early breakthrough dismissing opener Robin Uthappa (7) followed closely by the Indian skipper Rahul Dravid (5).
Earlier, Sri Lanka managed to score a decent total of 257 runs after Sangakkara smashed a brilliant century (110).
Prior to that Patel struck twice to uproot Sangakkara and Mahroof in consecutive balls. Earlier, Tendulkar trapped Arnold at seven.
Just after Sangakkara and Dilshan completed their half centuries each, Harbhajan provided India with a breakthrough by dismissing Dilshan (56) as he disturbed the 108-run stand between the two.
Jayawardene (4) fell to a Sreesanth's delivery in the 14th over of the match.
After a good spell in the washed-out first ODI in Kolkata, Munaf Patel continued to impress in Rajkot taking two crucial wickets. The seamer dismissed Marvan Atapattu for 15 in the 11th over creating pressure on the visiting side.

Shortly after the game had begun, Patel and Sreesanth packed off the openers - Sanath Jayasuriya (9) and Upul Tharanga (11) respectively.

Earlier, Indian skipper Rahul Dravid won the toss and elected to field.
