Ban on main Moharram procession completes 21 years | Ashoora observed with Zuljanah, Alam processions in Kashmir | | Ahmed Ali Fayyaz
EARLY TIMES REPORT
SRINAGAR, Dec 17: Like in last 21 years of the separatist armed struggle, authorities did not allow the main Ashoora procession in this capital city on occasion of the 10th of Moharram---anniversary of the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain and his associates at Karbala, in Iraq. However, scores of Alam, Tazia and Zuljanah processions were carried out as per tradition in downtown Srinagar and other Shia-dominated neighbourhoods all over Kashmir valley.
Pleading apprehensions of disruption from political elements, vested interests and those having no faith in the Moharram rituals, authorities did not issue permission to the main Ashoora procession that would have, in normal times, initiated at Abi Guzar in Civil Lines area and concluded late tonight at the historic Imambargah of Zadibal.

Does CM, DGP really believe in freedom of press? | 15 attacks on fourth estate in 11 months | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, Dec 17: With the manhandling of Dainik Jagran lens man by the police today, the attacks on the fourth estate by the men in uniform this year have gone up to fifteen. This does not include issue of notices by the Speaker Legislative Assembly to various editors and police action against four Jammu based newspapers.
Surprisingly the senior officers of the police and civil administration have apologized and assured action after every attack. But to this day, no erring police man has been brought to justice. Neither the Chief Minister nor the Director General of Police (DGP) seem interested in saving the fourth estate from the onslaught of the men in uniform.

| | Jammu & Kashmir government "inefficient" & "insensitive", Says Padgaonkar | | | NEHA
ET REPORT
JAMMU, Dec 17: In the second week of October, the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, denounced the Omar Abdullah-led government in downright language. It, among other things, virtually said: the prevailing unrest in the Kashmir Valley was the immediate fall-out of the "governance deficit" and "trust deficit." It was perhaps for the first time after 1947 that the Union Government had castigated any of the state governments using such a language. Had there been another Chief Minister in Jammu and Kashmir, he would have resigned in no time. For, what the CCS had said was nothing but an expression of no-confidence in Omar Abdullah. But...

Jammu, Dec 17: The Early Times is being made a victim by the government for raising the voice of Jammu and projecting the sorry plight of the people of the region. Surprisingly, none of the local Congress ministers and legislators, who claim to be the champions of the cause of Jammu have so far come forward either in ET support, or to ask the government to exercise its authority in a democratic manner. The ET had the option of either toeing the government line, or continue highlighting the pro-Jammu sentiment as regards the discrimination with the region. It, however, decided to stick to the 'journalism of truth and courage'.
While doing so, the newspaper got immense...

| | Action against ET deplorable: Lal Chand | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Dec 17: In the democratic arrangement of a political system, the freedom of expression is one of the basic fundamental that a free state carries along. Jammu and Kashmir, of late, has emerged as the enslaved state ruled by an incapable leader who after wreaking havoc in one region of the state now has returned to another to strike a clamp down on the free voice of the people stated BJP MLA Master Lal Chand . In this wake banning of advertisement to the most emergent newspaper ET apparently hints towards his government's machinations to stop free flow of facts to the people.
This is highly condemnable and against the ethical freedom of the press which is the fourt...

| | Unresolved stapled visa issue a bane for J&K residents | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, Dec 17: During his three-day visit to India the Chinese premier, Wen Jiabao, has demonstrated a pro-Pakistan bias in the policy of Beijing vis-a-vis India. China has clearly exhibited greater interest in the promotion of trade with India than normalising relations with its immediate neighbour.
Though the Chinese premier has given an indication of addressing trade imbalances, which at present tilts in favour of China, he has neither supported India's bid for a permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council, not backed India's stand on Kashmir being its integral part nor on Delhi's claim that terrorism emanated from the soil of Pakistan. In fact India wanted...
