War against corruption to commence again

Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Oct 16: The much hyped war against corruption that was shelved during the past few months is all set to commence again and the second list of the tainted officials who are likely to face axe would be released soon.
Highly placed sources told Early Times that Chief Minister has asked the Chief Secretary BR Sharma to convene the meeting of the panel which was headed by the former Chief Secretary Iqbal Khanday and go through the list framed by State Vigilance Organization (SVO) and other investigating agencies.
Sources said that former Chief Secretary refrained from holding the meeting of the high powered panel as he had made it clear that he doesn't want to sign the termination orders of the employees at the fag end of his career.
The second list of the corrupt officials prepared by the investigating agencies includes the names of nearly one hundred officials who have amassed huge wealth disproportionate to their known sources of income. "The investigating agencies have also succeeded in getting the details of the benami properties of many officials. The agencies have suggested that these properties should be taken over by the Government and seized as they have no legal owners," they added.
Insiders revealed the Chief Secretary is likely to convene the meeting of the panel before the Darbar closes in Srinagar. The panel has been authorized by the Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed to take a final decision vis-a-vis axing the officials involved in the corrupt practices. "Soon after the panel meets the list would be forwarded to the Chief Minister's Secretariat for the final nod," they added.
Sources said that a few Ministers of the PDP-BJP coalition have been trying their best to sabotage the second list of the corrupt officials as the people who figure in the list enjoy patronage of the politicians of the ruling coalition. "Many officials during the past few months have managed to develop cordial relations with the ruling party members and have persuaded them to push the entire issue on the backburner," they added.
Insiders said the Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed recently took up the issue of second list of corrupt officials with his close aides and expressed dismay over the delay that has been caused in releasing the second list.
Pertinently, soon after the Mufti-led Government took over the reins of the State in March, this year the Government shot a letter to State Vigilance Organization, to prepare a comprehensive list of officers who were involved in 'corrupt practices' or have been rendered as 'dead wood' to summarily dismiss them from services or suggest other kind of action, whose offence in corruption was minor.
The SVO submitted a list of 162 tainted officials to the Government. On July 1, the Government terminated the services of 63 officials of whom 25 were allegedly caught red-handed by the SVO while accepting bribe but list didn't contain the name of the "big sharks" and action was taken against the officials who were involved in petty graft cases.
The Chief Minister had taken a serious note of the issue and had directed the SVO to frame the second list of the corrupt officials to dispel the notion that war against corruption would continue and no one would be allowed to indulge in the corrupt practices.
