Early Times Report
KUPWARA, Feb 14: District Kupwara lacks a planned solid waste management system due to which the people apprehend outbreak of epudemuc.
Locals residents said that, "a vast amount of solid waste such as plastic bags, polythenes and other chemical substances finds its way into the roadside drains or in surface drains thus chocking the residents at large.
"With the population growth and increased commercial and industrial activity, the problem of waste disposal is becoming more intense day by day.
Mumtaz Ahmad of Awoora told early times that, the sewerage system is non-existent in the town and million tons liters per day sewerage generated is either directly discharged into the nearby streams or in full occupied drains without any treatment or, after partial treatment, through septic tanks. The unhygienic disposal mechanism makes the area disease-prone.
In the past we made representation before the authorities for containers of 50-cft size are proposed to be placed for a cluster of 50-60 houses, as on average 50-houses produce about 10 tons of waste in a day (at the rate of 410 gm per capita per day and 5-7 persons per household), said Nazir.
A group of local residents of main town Kupwara said that, every day piles of garbage are being kept unattended on the roadsides thus invites all kind of diseases and, of course, the omnipresent dogs and more the collection of solid wastes from neighborhood containers is witnessed with no solution.
The Municipal department is supposed to make this town neat and tidy as the spring is approaching and if the disposal arrangements were not made at the earliest, there is a chance of outbreak of diseases.
They should be fully equipped with adequate number of loaders, garbage carrying trucks, containers and garbage depots, and government should seriously think upon this problem and find a permanent solution for disposal of garbage and all, Locals added.
