| Gulmarg restaurants fleece tourists | | |  Asif Iqbal Naik

Srinagar, Aug 18: Tourists visiting tourist resort of Gulmarg in Kashmir are fleeced by restaurant owners who are selling food items at exorbitant rates.
As per the details and bill available with "Early Times" the restaurant owners charges double rates on hotel made food items including both vegetarian as well as non-vegetarian.
A water bottle which costs Rs. 19 as per its printed MRP is being sold for Rs. 30 while a chapatti which cost Rs. 4-5 is being sold at Rs. 10. Similarly, a half chicken which costs Rs. 180-200 is being sold at Rs. 300 in general area of Gulmarg town and its adjoining areas.
As far as the case at first phase Gondola halt, the food items are being sold at rates which is three times higher than the actual rates. A full Kashmiri chicken which normally cost Rs. 350-400 is being sold for Rs. 1000 and plane chapatti which costs Rs. 5 is being sold at Rs. 30/ Chapatti, Kashmiri Halwa at Rs. 200, Kashmiri Firni at Rs. 150, Chicken Biryani at Rs. 300, Mutton Polow at Rs. 350, Veg Polow at Rs. 200, Paneer Polow at Rs. 250, Steam rice at Rs. 150.
While talking to "Early Times" a restaurant owner said that the variation in the rates at first halt spot of gondola is due to heavy carriage charged by the Jammu and Kashmir Cable Car Corporation for transporting the material to the spot.
He said that there is no road up to this spot as a result of which they are totally depend on gondola service and added that the specially designed private vehicle also charge heavily for transportation of the material.
They said that due to less flow of tourist their businesses had suffered badly added that if Cable Car Corporation exempted them from transportation charges, the cost of the food items will automatically comes down. He said that due to repairing of gandola services, their business suffered badly for two months. He said that around 17 shopkeepers run business at first halt gondola point and called upon the authorities to look into the issue so that visiting tourist could not feel cheated.
The visitors also called upon the authorities to take necessary measures and action against those restaurant owners involved in fleecing the visitors.
A local inhabitant Mohammad Aslam while commenting on the issue said that all this gives bad name to the area and added that no matter our local businessmen are suffering due to less flow of tourist but this does not mean that the restaurant owners will fleece tourists. |
