Credibility or power, BJP has to choose
PDP rebels want CM from Kashmir

Early Times Report

Jammu, Aug 19: In wake of the apparent split in the Peoples Democratic Party and former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti being left with only 15 MLAs, the PDP rebels are creating a notion that they are going to form the new government in Jammu and Kashmir with the support of the MLAs from Bharatiya Janata Party.
The impression is being created that anyone from Kashmir would be the next chief minister and there is no possibility about leader from Jammu heading the new dispensation. "It's unfortunate that entire political discourse in J&K revolves around Kashmir and Jammu figures nowhere," said a politician.
He said that even if BJP decides to support the PDP rebels their strength would be more than them as they have 25 legislators in the 87 member assembly in the state. "It's a cardinal principle that numbers matter. The party would highest number of seats gets the top post. If BJP decides to support the PDP rebels then it should strike a deal which gives representation to Jammu region," the politician added.
An insider revealed that a few BJP leaders from Jammu region are only interested in power and they don't mind having a Chief Minister from Kashmir as long as they get their offices and chairs back. He said that the PDP rebels are in touch with the BJP leaders and have almost convinced them to allow someone from Kashmir hold the top post.
An analyst said, "It's really sad that despite BJP having an upper hand the party is allowing the Kashmir centric politicians to call the shots and get away with everything. If the BJP decides to join the hands with the rebels it should make it clear that it would join the government on its terms and no one would be allowed to dictate terms."
He said that BJP by joining hands with the PDP in the past has lost lot of ground in the Jammu region and it should not repeat its mistake. "The BJP leaders should press for their demand about having a Hindu Chief Minister at place. If PDP rebels don't agree then BJP should not give any support to them," the analyst added.
A Kashmir watcher said, "BJP leaders should realize that if they don't give up their greed for power and make yet another compromise it would further erode their credibility and people of Jammu won't give them another chance. Ball is in their court they have to choose between the power and their credibility which is at stake."
