Shameless' BJP leaders demand 73rd, 74th amendments in State

Early Times Report

Jammu, Oct 17: BJP's height of duplicity exposed today when party's state president along with other leaders demanded extension of 73rd and 74th amendments in J&K. Today while addressing a press conference, BJP's state president Ravinder Raina demanded extension of 73rd and 74th amendments in J&K just to befool the people.
It was the same BJP which had supported PDP in the Legislative Assembly and passed a bill to conduct indirect elections of Sarpanches.
July 2, 2016 was black-day in the political history of J&K when state government in which BJP was equal partner had passed a bill, amidst protests and walkout by the opposition had passed an amendment to Panchayati Raj Act, allowing indirect election of Sarpanches by Panches instead of a direct election.
The Government moved a Bill to amend Jammu and Kashmir Panchayati Raj Act, 1989 in the Upper House, which was opposed by the Congress and the National Conference legislators who termed the amendment as a step to "discredit and dis-empower" the Panchayati Raj Institutes in the State.
However, the State Government had defended the amendment, saying it was the procedure at highest level of governance at the State and Central Government. BJP leaders including former ministers had shamelessly supported PDP to bulldoze Panchayati Raj Institutions in J&K just to enjoy power.
It was July 12 this year the then Governor N N Vohra had ractified that mistake by approving the proposal to amend the Jammu and Kashmir Panchayati Raj Act, 1989, for conducting elections of sarpanches directly by the electorate of halqa panchayats and not by the indirect method of electing sarpanches from among the panches themselves.
The move has restored the original position in the Jammu and Kashmir Panchayati Raj Act, 1989, which provided for direct elections of sarpanches, a position altered by an amendment passed in 2016.
