| Fearing defeat in Jammu, BJP trying to build 'castles' in Kashmir | | |

Jammu, Oct 17: After facing stiff competition in Jammu region, Bharatiya Janata Party is pinning its hopes about winning municipal polls in Kashmir.
Recently the BJP state president Ravinder Raina claimed that Srinagar Mayor would be from BJP. "For the first time, Mayor of Srinagar will be from BJP, and he will be elected by the people and will work for their welfare," Raina had said.
An analyst while talking to Early Times said that none of the BJP leaders have made a same claim about Jammu region as they know it very well that independents could outnumber the BJP counselors in Jammu and winning the winter capital won't be a cake walk.
According to the officials as many as 130 candidates in Kashmir won the municipal elections unopposed. BJP has already won 71 seats uncontested in the municipal polls in the Valley.
A Kashmir watcher said that there is no doubt about the fact that BJP has won many seats uncontested in the Valley but there are many seats still whose results are awaited. "BJP should stop building castles in Kashmir and introspect why its candidates are on a week wicket in Jammu region, where the party won 25 out of 37 assembly seats in 2014 polls," he added.
A politician said that BJP leaders are trying to bury their failures in Jammu by claiming that the party has feared exceptionally well in Kashmir, where it failed to open its account in 2014 assembly polls. "The results of the municipal polls in Jammu region would definitely throw up many surprises. BJP can get a Zor-ka-jhatka in its citadel," the politician added.
He said polling percentage in Kashmir has been low and there is a possibility about BJP winning more seats in the Valley but same doesn't hold true for Jammu region. "BJP shared power with the Peoples Democratic Party for more than three years but its leaders and ministers acted as second fiddles of the PDP and danced to the tunes of the Kashmir centric leaders," the politician claimed.
He said that BJP leaders are also aware about the fact that people of Jammu are "unhappy" with them and results of the municipal polls in the Jammu region could turn the tables on them. "Results of these municipal polls and the forthcoming panchayat elections in Jammu region could prove to be trend setters for the next parliamentary and assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir," the politician said.
Another analyst said, "Governor's administration has remained firm on it stand and has ensured that ULB and municipal polls are held. Despite remaining in power for the three and a half years BJP failed to prevail upon the PDP to get these polls held." |
