NC, PDP left speechless; national parties strengthen foothold in Valley
10/20/2018 10:35:21 PM
Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 20: Kashmir centric parties National Conference and Peoples Democratic Party have been left speechless as the results of the Urban Local Bodies polls have paved the way for national parties to strengthen their foothold in the strife torn Valley.
The NC and PDP while announcing their decision to boycott the ULB polls had claimed that situation is not conducive for holding any elections in the state. But they have been proven wrong.
Despite PDP and NC staying away from elections the Government of India went ahead with the exercise and ensured that ULB polls are held. "Results have thrown no surprises. These were on expected lines. BJP, Congress, Peoples Conference and independents are all set to control the Urban Local Bodies in Kashmir. PDP and NC have been ejected out of the system. ULBs are grass root level institutions. If the newly elected counselors concentrate on reaching out to the people it would help in filling the void which has been created due to elected MLAs not reaching out to their own people," said an analyst.
He said, "Emergence of the national parties in the political arena of the Valley could prove fruitful for the country. These parties can keep the Kashmir centric parties at bay. It's unfortunate that Kashmir centric parties despite enjoying all the benefits and privileges in one way or other have been patronizing the separatists and anti-national elements."
The analyst said the new breed of politicians, which is appearing on the political arena of the Valley are clear with their thoughts. "The new politicians know it very well that if they want Kashmir to remain peaceful and prosper then they have to sail in only one boat and have to remain loyal to their own country. They cannot act like traditional politicians, who used to speak in one language in New Delhi and another in Kashmir," he added.
A Kashmir watcher said that NC and PDP are regretting their decision to boycott the polls. "These parties know it very well that this is a beginning and if they continue to avoid the democratic process both the parties would become irrelevant. There are reports that many PDP and NC workers have already said goodbye to both these parties and have moved towards greener pastures," he added.
The Kashmir watcher said that both the parties may not openly contest the forthcoming panchayat polls but there is every possibility about both these parties asking their people to join the fray as the panchayat polls are held on non-partisan basis. "If they don't contest the panchayat polls it would further lead to both these parties losing their base in the Valley," he added.
