Independents close to Singh win vital seats
Choudhary Lal Singh shows mirror to BJP
10/20/2018 10:35:33 PM
Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 20: Ignoring Choudhary Lal Singh any more, is likely to prove heavy for Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) as many independent candidates close to him have won in various municipal committees of district Kathua.
It has become very tough for BJP to control various municipal units such as Kathua Municipal Council, Lakhanpur Municipal Committee and Nagri Municipal committee as independent candidates are game changers.
In the Lakhanpur Municipal Committee, which has a total of 7 seats, three independent candidates close to Choudhary Lal Singh have won seats beating the candidates of BJP.
These candidates are Sardar Darshan Singh from ward number 4, Kanta Devi from ward number 1 and Manjeet Kour from ward number 5.
BJP has won only three seats and another independent candidate, Surmudin, who had won unopposed from Ward number 2 would prove a game changer. According to sources, Surmudin is close to Lal Singh and the independent candidates are likely to head Lakhanpur Municipal committee.
One option for BJP could be to support Surmudin and assured him to make him chairman but there are bleak possibilities for it.
Similarly in the Kathua Muncipal Council, which has 21 seats, BJP has emerged as a majority party with 8 seats but equal number of independent candidate have won. Out of these independent candidates, brother of Lal Singh, Rajinder Singh alias Babi has won along with his wife. Two more close confidants of Babi have also won from two other wards.
The Congress party has won five seats whereas according to sources out of the 8 independent candidates, two are close to Congress leader Naresh Sharma. These two candidates were those, who were not given official mandate by Congress party but were close to Naresh Sharma, so had contested elections as independent candidates and won.
The local legislator of BJP had rejected the mandate given by party high command to Gopal Sharma in Ward number 5. Later Ashok Koul had said that they had changed the mandate but changing mandate proved fatal for BJP, whose candidate Bodh Raj Gupta stood third in the list of candidates.
Independent candidate Ashok Sharma alias Shoku has won from the ward and is learnt to be close to Rajinder Singh Babi. A total of 11 ward members are required to make chairman and in such scenario, BJP is short of 3 candidates and likely to depend on independent candidates.
Similar is the situation in Nagri Municipal Committee where 5 BJP candidates have won the seats out of 13 seats. Six independent candidates have won the seats while Congress has won 2 seats. Those six independent candidates are again close to Choudhary Lal Singh and can install their chairman with the help of Congress.
In all these municipal units, BJP will have to face tough time and there could be large scale horse trading to wrest control over these units.
