Early Times Report
Budgam, Feb 19: A village in central Kashmir's Budgam district is reeling under darkness from last 2 months inspite of the fact that a 7.5 Megawatt Hydropower Project was commissioned in the same village more than 10 years back. The villagers allege that they get power supply for merely 4 hours and the voltage is also very low.
Details available with Early Times reveal that several villages in the upper reaches of Budgam especially in Chadoora tehsil in this Central Kashmir's district are reeling under darkness from last couple of months. The severe power crises has added to the miseries of the locals as the they allege that power is provided for mere 2 hours in morning and 2 hours in the evening.
"When the Hydro-power project was set up in our village around 2006 we were told by Government that entire village will get 24 x 7 power supply. For setting up the project hundreds of forest trees were axed , forest land was transferred and Doodh Ganga river flowing through our village was vandalized. Now after more than 10 years since the power project is in operation, villagers are not even provided power supply for 10 hours in the day.
The area gets very less power supply even in summer months when the power generation is at its peak allege locals. As per reports the villages of Jeddan , Kutabal , Batawodder, Jabbad , Surasyar located around power project in Branwar are reeling under darkness from last 2 months.
"The 7.5 Megawatt power project constructed in nearby Branwar village many years back by a private company from Chandigrah has not been able to mitigate power crisis in the villages of Susaryar block. Most of the power generated is supplied to the Grid Station at Bemina and the local villages continue to suffer and the authorities do not at all negotiate with the owner of the power house on this serious issue "said Mushtaq Ahmad a resident of Bonen Surasyar.
" We pay Rs 375 per month as power tariff towards Power Developm-ent Department (PDD) but we don't even use the energy for Rs 100 and in some adjoining villages where people get good power supply , such people pay just Rs 108 per month , this is injustice with us " said Ghulam Rasool Wani of Branwar.
