Jammu, Aug 9: Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Government has started taking strategic military steps to counter an aggressive China which has been troubling India on the borders in Ladakh.
Apart from directing Indian railways to speed up construction of rail link between Bilaspur-Mandi-Leh, sources said that Modi Sarkar is planning to weave a net of metalled roads in entire Leh-Ladakh region. They added that Army would be playing a major role in the planning and execution of these road projects. They further said that these roads include Srinagar-Ladakh national highway.
Sources further said that a new Air Force Station to base fighter jets is coming up at Nyoma which is strategically located in South-Easten Ladakh where it overlooks a highway that is used by Chinese army. It is being expanded into a full-fledged airbase, allowing fighter planes and heavy transport aircraft to land here.
Nyoma is located at a height of 13,000 feet and 100 miles from Daulat Beg Oldie; india stopped using it after war with China in 1962, but reactivated it in 2010. Nyoma is likely to be completely operational by 2016-17 and will be used to station fighter jets and provide logistical help to the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and Ladakh Scouts which patrol the Line of Actual Control or de-facto border with China.
Chinese soldiers entered Indian Territory at DB and set up a group of nests, refusing to retreat for three weeks. They did retreat but not before the intervention of the highest authorities in both China and India. Sources further disclosed that a full-fledged armoured brigade will now be based in Ladakh while two more armoured regiments will join 68 armoured regiment which made history by crossing the 13,000 feet plus Zojila pass and is now based near Nyoma.
On the other side, one more infantry brigade is now moving closer to Daulat Beg Oldie (DBO). It will join the existing Infantry brigade at Tangtse village on Leh- Pangong Tso road. Tangtse lies on the Valley floor through which the Harong stream flows. One road leads down from Chang La pass, another goes south toward Chusrul, and another crosses the stream and goes generally eastward toward Pangong Tso.
Both are militarily vital for India as well as Ladakh. Besides this, a new cantonment is coming up on the outskirts of Leh to house new support units of Army. Sources further said that work on this cantonment has speeded up and would be completed within shortest possible time. Army has been asked to ensure completion of these major projects within next five to seven years, said the sources.
Sources further disclosed that plans are also being drawn for installation of BSNL towers at Demchock, Pangong, Tsaga, Phobrang, and Chumur villages. They added that strategically important Lukung-Spangmik-Man-Merak-Chushul road that goes all along the Pangong Lake is being black-topped with culverts as well as cemented troughs to take care of streams.
These moves are aimed at countering an aggressive Chinese Peoples Liberation Army (PLO) which has in the past breached the line of actual control (LAC) several times on one pretext or the other. Latest incident occurred in Charding Nilu Nullah Junction (CNNJ) in Demchock sector on July 25 when PLA personnel entered the area on their vehicles in the wee hours claiming it to be Chinese territory.
The PLA soldiers who wanted to have a round of the area were stopped by Indian Army and personnel of Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP). After 30-minute standoff followed by a banner drill where armies of both countries warned each other against moving a step forward, the Chinese PLA returned to their side.
The Chinese troops, riding on horses, had earlier entered through Chumar area on July 13 only to be confronted by Indian soldiers and after the usual banner drill between the two sides, the PLA patrol returned to their territory. The incident had taken place at Patrol Point number 62.
