Floods wash away 2 in Tangmarg village, 150 persons trapped in South Kashmir
Water crosses danger mark at Sangam, authorities order closure of educational institutions in South, Central Kashmir

SRINAGAR, Sept 3: Two persons were drowned after they were washed away by gushing waters at Hardu Abura in North Kashmir's Baramulla district while as more than 150 civilians are trapped in South Kashmir as the authorities sounded the flood alarm across South Kashmir today evening.
In the meantime, the divisional administration of Kashmir has announced that all the schools and colleges shall remain closed in Srinagar, Anantnag, Pulwama, Shopian and Kulgam districts tomorrow due to the flood situation.
Reports said that two persons got washed away after the water breached the embankment in the Hardu Abura village in Tangmarg area in Baramulla district. Due to incessant rains the river passing by the village developed a breach and the flood water washed the two persons away who were walking on the embankment.
Last reports said that both the bodies are yet to be recovered by the rescue team. The deceased were identified as Abdul Rashid Gojri and Ghulam Ahmad Bhat.
In South Kashmir's Anantnag, Kulgam and Shopian districts more than 150 civilians were trapped due to the floods in some of the villages of these districts. The district administration along with police and army has launched the operation to save the stranded civilians. The rescue operation was going on when this report was filed.
In the Tangmarg area seven persons working in a stone crusher were trapped as they could not cross the Ferozpora River since the river is flowing at full speed. The district administration has asked for help from Indian Air Force so that the trapped civilians are air lifted from the site of the incident.
At the same time the Irrigation and Flood Control department has confirmed that the water level of river Jhelum has crossed the danger mark at Sangam in the Bijbehara area of South Kashmir's Anantnag district. The water level was recorded in the evening as 22.30 feet which is 1.30 feet above the danger mark of 19 feet at this place.
However, the water level of river Jhelum at Ram MunshiBagh near the summer capital is below the danger mark. The water level was recorded as 13 feet which is five feet below the danger mark of 18 feet. At Sonawari in North Kashmir the water level of river Jhelum is well below the danger mark as there was less rainfall in North Kashmir when compared with Central and South Kashmir.
Srinagar, the summer capital of state recorded the day temperature as 16.8 degrees. Today's day temperature was more than 12 degrees less than the normal day temperature. The city recorded more than 40 millimeters of rainfall since last evening. Qazigund, the gateway of Kashmir recorded around 80 millimeters of rainfall since the morning.
A police spokesman said that Kulgam police launched a rescue operation when an entire village at Banjarpora, Aakhran was inundated with flood water and more than 35 families including 25 members of Bakarwal along with their flocks were trapped in it.
"Rafting Boats from Pahalgam were called in by Police and District administration to evacuate the trapped people including 26 children. The rescue operation is still continuing, DC Kulgam and SP Kulgam are personally supervising the operation on spot,' said the police spokesman.
The police spokesman said that eight families consisting of 37 members including children were rescued by police when they were trapped in flood in Birigam, Devsar. The rescued families have been relocated to the Panchayat Ghar temporarily. SHO Devsar, Kulgam SI Manzoor Ahmad along with his police party rushed to the village as soon as reports of water surge came and evacuated the flood hit families. The police party is still on job as more people in the area are trapped.
The police spokesman said that in Anantnag police launched a rescue operation at village Fathepora where five persons are trapped in flood water. Efforts are on to rescue them. At Ganjiwara Anantnag police rescued a lady who got swayed in flood water in Jehlum.
"A youth who was swayed away by the gushing water in nallah Sindh, today was rescued by police, civil administration with the assistance of Army. Manzoor Ahmad Ganie son of Asadullah Ganie resident of Check Watal, Lar was swayed away by gushing water in nallah Sindh at Sindbal and was trapped on landmass in the nallah while collecting wood from the nallah. However, police and civil administration with the help of Army launched a rescue operation and the person was saved from the nallah," said the police spokesman.
