Money minting shops Unity talks an exercise in futility

JAMMU, Sept 3 : PM Modi has adopted a dangerous policy towards Kashmir and, hence, all Kashmiri separatists should forget their differences and come on one platform in the larger interest of the cause, said hardcore pro-Pakistan agent Syed Ali Shah Geelani last week. At the same time, he made it clear that those who would wish to adhere to his call will have to follow his ideology and his ideology means Kashmir’s merger with Muslim Pakistan, no talks under Indian constitution, no to Musharraf’s four point formula, no question of soft borders, no status-quo or no out of box solution to the Kashmir issue. Which means those who would want to join the proposed platform will have only one agenda: Work for the state’s merger with Pakistan or at best, to seek solution to the so-called problem in this part of the state as per the UN resolutions. The first Kashmiri separatist who considered the unity call of Geelani was Jammu & Kashmir Hurriyat Conference Shabir Ahmad Shah. The result was that some Geelani’s men held a meeting with Shabir Ahmad Shah on Sunday. What transpired during the meeting is still not known. And on Tuesday, the self-styled chairman of APHC (M) Mirwaiz Umar Farooq expressed himself in favour of unity among separatists. Vouching for unity efforts, he said unity among separatists has become imperative considering the hard line approach of Modi government. “Modi government has made its intentions clear to divide Kashmir on communal lines. I think it is right time for separatists to get united and come on a common platform and formulate a joint strategy to counter the rigid policies of New Delhi,” he said. At the same time, he said that it was for the executive body of his outfit to take a final decision and that it would meet in the next few days to discuss the whole issue threadbare. Mirwaiz is, it needs to be underlined, not opposed to the idea of talks with New Delhi. He is also of the view that the Musharraf’s formula could be accepted as a first step towards the final goal. He, likeShabir Shah, vacillates. Both talk good of Pakistan, meet Pakistani leaders in Delhi, Islamabad and other places, claim they draw inspiration from Pakistan, but, at the same time, they also sometime talk about the Kashmir’s Azadi. Geelani had left the Hurriyat Conference to establish his own separatist outfit – Tehrik-e-Hurriyat – in 2003 following his difference with Mirwaiz. The self-styled chairman of JKLF Yasin Malik has not opened his cards as yet as far as the unity talks are concerned. He has been operating from this platform separately since years now. He is also not really in the good books of Pakistan and this became clear on August 18 last month, when he put in all efforts to persuade Pakistan High Commissioner to Delhi to give him sometime so that he, like Geelani, Shah and Farooq, could also discuss Kashmir with him. Malik and the other three separatists are not even talking terms in the real sense of the term for obvious reasons. One of the reasons is the fear that formation of a common front would dilute their own leadership, thus harming their financial interests or create a condition leading to the closure of their money-minting shops. They can forgo anything but not money and comforts.
The fact is that neither Geelani nor Omar or Malik and Shah is prepared to work under the chairmanship of other. Even their greater supporter A G Noorani has repeatedly said that these Hurriyat leaders are a divided house and they tread different paths. Only on August 23, 2014, he, in his “Tenuous ties” (Dawn, Pakistan, Aug 23, 2014), wrote thus: “Hurriyat has leaders who are barely on speaking terms with one another, and meet visitors separately. They have no constructive proposals to offer beyond demanding a place at the high table”. Indeed, the unity talks are an exercise in futility.
