Poll boycott
9/4/2014 12:57:20 AM
Rustam

JAMMU, Sept 3 : NC working president and Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who is not finding a safe constituency for himself anywhere in the Kashmir Valley and against whom a strong anti wave is blowing in the Ganderbal Assembly constituency, hitherto a pocket borough of the Abdullah family, has found in the person of senior Congress leader and former minister Abdul GaniVakil a great supporter as far as his stand on poll boycott is concerned.
Omar Abdullah, who has also been accusing the PDP of flirting with the BJP, has been saying again and again that Geelani’s call for poll boycott will not help the Kashmiri cause and that the only beneficiaries would be the BJP, the PDP and the RSS. He has repeatedly said that the poll boycott could help the BJP capture at least half a dozen seats in the Valley, namely HabbaKadal, AmiraKadal, Khanyar, Sopore, Tral and so on and appealed to Geelani to reconsider his stand taking into consideration his own cause which he holds very dear as well as the larger interest of Kashmiris. And on Monday, Abdul Gani Vakil also took almost a similar line. He warned the Hurriyat leadership that “propagation of the poll boycott will definitely help BJP and its allies in the state because BJP has succeeded in making inroads in Kashmir region after Parliamentary elections with the connivance of some so called nationalist elements”.
“These so-called nationalist people have a single motive to gain wealth and power for securing luxury life style for themselves and have no sympathy with the people,” he also said. Obviously, he hinted at Kashmir Hindus.
Besides, Vakil urged the Hurriyat leadership to “analyze every negative dimension of poll boycott otherwise people will never forgive them for propagating wrong policies”. He made these comments at Rafiabad while addressing a public meeting. It will be seen whether Geelani would oblige Omar Abdullah, Vakil and others of their ilk by not enforcing his boycott call. But one thing is very clear: Omar Abdullah is afraid both of the PDP and the BJP and the possibility of the BJP making inroads in the Valley has shattered Vakil.
In any case, the BJP factor has created an interesting situation in the Kashmir Valley. The BJP would gain in Kashmir if Geelani and others of his ilk enforce poll boycott and there are 6 to 8 constituencies in the Valley where the Kashmiri Hindu votes could tilt the balance in favour of the BJP. The nation would gain if there is no poll boycott. No poll boycott would mean a heavy polling and the heavy polling would mean the defeat of the ongoing secessionist movement. The fact of the matter is that the 2014 assembly elections are very significant for the future of Kashmir.
