Police foils casual labourers' 'march, scores injured in police action

Srinagar, Sept 3 : Scores of casual labourers sustained injuries after police swung into action and resorted to cane charge when the protesting employees under the banner of J&K National Trade Union Front (JKNTUF) made a bid to march towards ahead of main gate of Civil Secretariat in Srinagar on Wednesday. Reports said that braving heavy showers, the casual labourers and need based workers of various government departments assembled at Exhibition Ground Crossing in winter capital and staged a massive protest in support of their demands including regularization and release of pending wages.
The protesting casual labourers drawn from different department including casual/need based labourers of PWD, Floriculture, PHE, Forest, Wild Life, Soil Conservation, SDA, Tourism and Agriculture Department today under the banner of J&K National Trade Union Front (JKNTUF) marched towards Civil Secretariat Srinagar and managed to reach to main gate of Civil Secretariat.
As the protesting employees reached at the entrance of Civil Secretariat, large contingent policemen deployed there stopped them and when protestors resisted the police force, the police resorted to cane charge in a bid to disperse the defiant employees resulting into injuries to atleast a score of protestors. Besides this Police also sprayed coloured water to disperse the protestors.
Eyewitnesses said that at least 12 casual labours were injured during police action. Some of the injured were identified as Muhammad Yousuf, Zahoor Ahmed, Farooq Ahmed, Khurshid Ahmed, Firdous Ahmed, Mushtaq Ahmed and Abdul Rasheed.
Earlier prior to proceeding towards Civil Secretariat, JKNTUF president Muhammad Gafoor Dar while addressing the protestors condemned the dilly dallying tactics of the State Government regarding regularization and payment of pending wages of these causal labourers engaged with different department. Dar and others speakers threatened that JKNTUF would launch a massive agitation if the demands of these workers would not be conceded at earliest.
Meanwhile casual labourers from SKIMS, Horticulture department also staged a protest at Press Enclave Srinagar in favour of their demands and urged upon the government to regularize them at an earliest
