Rains threaten life, crops in Kashmir
9/4/2014 1:14:09 AM
Shakeel A khan,

SRINAGAR, Sept 3: As rains continue to lash the Valley, flood threat is looming large putting life and property of the people. The kind of situation that has arisen out of the incessant rains is giving sleepless nights to the peasants because at most of the places the rain water has entered the paddy fields.
The hope of the bumper crop this year may turn into a nightmare for the peasants because the rainfall has been predicted till the end of the weak.
The continuing rainfall has doubled the pain of the people associated with the agriculture because they have already suffered immensely due to the damage caused to their orchards. More trouble is in offing for the peasants if a flood is going to strike the valley, which is very much likely given the heavy down pour over the last couple of days. One can see the people associated with the agricultural activities as if they are busy in the silent prayers pleading to the almighty to put an end to the potentially dangerous rainfall that is threatening to consume hope of the poor people.
It flood comes in this harvest season; it will be no less than catastrophe. It is going to transform the cheers into sobs as for as the poor peasants are concerned. This correspondent went around many areas were the water has gushed into the paddy fields with the poor peasants watching all this happening helplessly because they could do nothing more than that. The water that has entered the paddy fields has made the crop to bow making the problem even more complex for the people associated with the agriculture.
Early Times wanted to talk to some peasants in the Soibugh area of the Budgam district to know about their feelings to which they said that the whole year's hard work has been wasted as one can anticipate given the continuing rains and the threat of the flood. Even if the flood doesn't come still the rainfalls have damaged the standing crops to a great extent. As per these peasants, the dry autumn is very much helpful in carrying out the harvesting activities.
Carrying out such activities when there is water in the fields, is out of bounds. According to these peasants even if the rains stop right now and the sunshine prevails, still then the losses will be irreparable and insurmountable. Ghulam Mohammad, a peasant from the Bemina area broke down while talking to Early Times saying that everything has been ruined for him as the field of hope has turned into pains giving for him.
If Ghulam Mohammad is to believed, the government of the state has done nothing to protect the agricultural land from the floods, in fact as according him the government has allowed all the flood channels to flow into the agricultural fields.
