Early Times Report

Jammu, Apr 22: While the biopic of the Boxing legend Mary Com that hit the celluloid screen recently inspiing the younger generation across the world besides being a huge commercial success, the story of a daughter of the soil, who braved all odds to become Best Woman Veteran Athlete in the country recently escaped attention of all and sundry.
On the wrong side of her forties, Pawan Sharma, a government teacher by profession, who picked up running instinctively, was declared Best Veteran Woman Athlete in the country; in the recently concluded National Masters Athletic Meet at Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh. Pawan registered comprehensive victories over her nearest rivals from the states which provide much better facilities to their athletes, winning gold medals in 800 meters, 1500 meters and 3000 meters events.
"I started running some eight years back only after my children grew up, giving me some time to pursue my passion. Today my son is studying Medicine in GMC and my daughter is studying her higher secondary and I can afford to train two hours a day" said Pawan. "I noticed that gradually my endurance and passion for running were increasing and I got support and encouragement from my husband and the family to go on" she said, adding that a group of fitness freaks of her age also provided their unrelenting support and encouragement to her. Attributing her success on the track to her husband, a faculty in the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University and her children, she regretted little support and recognition from the Government, more particularly, the Education Department, where she is a teacher. "I do not expect any incentives in cash and kind, but I expect the department to recognize my achievements and allow me time to train regularly.
My department is yet to even sanction leave that I sought for participating in the National championship where I was declared best athlete" she averred, indicating at the general bureaucratic apathy towards her and many others like her. Pawan, who has won several medals in National Marathon and half Marathon events wants youngsters to chase their dreams and take out time for their passion despite the constraints of careers. With nothing to achieve in material times, this valiant athlete still has dreams to participate in national events and pursue her passion of running in years to come.
