IT IS NOT END OF THE ROAD FOR KASHMIRI PANDITS
4/23/2015 12:01:41 AM
Dr Romesh Raina

As a consequence of
extreme separatism and terror ideology the battle against the proposed rehabilitation of displaced Kashmiri Pandits has entered into a significant phase in Kashmir. Fresh challenges have arisen which threaten to sweep all the assumptions in the displaced KP mind. Anti KP mindset in the valley has acquired influence over the Kashmiri Muslims society and its impact is gradually spreading. What is greatly threatening is that the main stream politics becoming captive and expressionless to either defend the decision or protect its own people living as exiles now for more than 25 years. Its ambit has become hugely overextended and has resulted sowing the seeds of deepening divide between unopinionated, whose voice got hijacked. Making it thus easier for political and terror groups with known anti KP return views to invade Kashmir’s politico social space. This is an example of how the forces inimical to the rehabilitation of the displaced community militated against the mere announcement to achieve the evil objective of keeping Kashmir as a monolithic entity within India.
Denial of plurality therefore has become an important instrument of motivation. It is a significant process and has brought to the mind some aspects ignited and nourished at crucial points. It has cast its shadow on all the conceivable areas of the polity. Infact, it has been the prime ideological pre-occupation for many many years and despite the efforts to contest, it continues to dodge us.
The wide spread reverberations caused by the separatist dominated Kashmiri politics is a civil war against the exiled minorities. Central to this process is a Muslim agenda and its authors have become the de-facto rulers, who have the Kashmiri society in their strong grip.
It lionised the leaders in particular separatist politicians to the extent that they thought and rightfully so that they could do away with everything that came their away. Surprisingly to our utter dismay, the response from the country’s political class has been bizarre all along. Otherwise how can one think of entering in to recurrent political accords with the successive leaders of Kashmir, be that Delhi accord of 1952 between Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru and Shri Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, Beg Parthsarathy accord of 1975 between Shri Mirza Mohammad Afzal Beg and Shri Parthasarathy and Rajeev-Farooq accord of 1986.
These accords explain the machinations of politics of blackmail by crafty Kashmiri politicians and surrender by the centre without realizing that it did incalculable damage to the secular polity of Kashmir and its minorities, who ultimately became its victims. These leaders from Kashmir succeeded in extracting concessions after concessions from India. Its practice therefore has become one of the corner stones of present day mayhem. Otherwise how can one imagine that J&K legislature shall have all the 75 MLAs belonging to the ruling party at one point of time. It fostered an environment that gave Kashmiri majoritarianism an existential direction and Kashmirhood came to be defined within the narrow confines of the religious identity.
The subsequent journey of politics saw events like Parmeshwari episode of 1967 and forced exodus of minorities in 1990, steps that strengthened the anti plural march of the polity. Such events epitomized the darkening picture of the history of Kashmir.
It has become a symbol that has engulfed the large swaths of KP world. It is what our beloved Kashmir has been reduced to.
Present manufactured outburst in Kashmir marks a tragic milestone in the post exodus history of Kashmiri Pandits. Denial of rightful place to the displaced minorities in Kashmir is not only harrowing for the minority victim groups but also a supreme disservice to the values and culture of the place called Kashmir. No reckoning is therefore possible with the unpleasant and ugly reality that the perpetrators of atrocities on the Kashmiri Pandits got away with genocide and are still unaccountable for their ghastly deeds. Print, electronic and social media have all been twisted to keep people of India in a state of darkness about the unleashing of terror against the hapless minorities.
Exiled Pandits have suffered immensely from the relentless violence on them. Post exodus, people in Kashmir are unwilling to face up the historical wrong which cannot move ahead unless treated humanely.
The weight of the accumulated falsification of truth is a heavy burden that destroys and demolishes any structure created brick by brick. It only ends up leaving behind an oppressive and aggressive system devoid of compassion, love and liberal values.
Kashmir is in a dense opacity with layers of distortions of history. As a consequence the distortions are far beyond repairable mode and this is a reflection of negativity and rejection of restoration of status quo ante, as existed before 1990. The rejectionists have succeeded in executing their plans of killing the desire of KPs return to the valley. KPs are becoming a symbol in fighting and surviving a David v/s Goliath battle.
They have been rowing their own boat in a hostile environment to contest the ongoing battle of making them irrelevant. The collective response shown by them despite the constraints has a large massage that all is not over and that Kashmiri Pandits will never give up their right to the land that rightfully belongs to them.
