Early Times Report

Udhampur, July 25 : Alleging non serious approach towards the healthcare of the people in far remote areas, the locals from Galiote of Panchari in Udhampur district today staged protest against state government and health authorities as the Health Sub Centre in the locality remained closed for the last three months.
Protestors raising slogans against health authorities said that the health Sub Centre at Galiote in Panchari Block is closed since last three months putting people to face the burnt. Highlighting the plight of the people in the area, the Sarpanch Galiote Surjeet Singh said, "Since the Health Sub Centre stands closed for the last three months the aged, children and pregnant women are facing problems in manifolds." "People have to walk to closest road head from where they prefer to reach to Primary Health Center (PHC) Panchari or to District Hospital (DH) Udhampur which is proving an extra burden on their already low economic status, he added.
The village head (Sarpanch) further said despite representations and deputations to local leaders and concerned health authorities like Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Udhampur and Block Medical Officer (BMO) Panchari all is vain even their attempts to contact concerned MLA Reasi Constituency turned futile and thus they (people of Galiote) took to roads to highlight their demands. Locals said that people of Galiote comprising majority living under Below Poverty Line (BPL) are denied access to basic health care services following the only Health Sub-Center being locked for more than three months.
"The Govt has built the center many years ago in the village Galiot Panchayat panchari to improve basic health care services in the area but it is opened only during immunization and other health programmes initiated under state and centrally sponsored scheme but it went dysfunctional as soon as the scheme ends. According to people, the alleged closures of this health centre for the three months has forced locals to travel over 70 kms to the Distt hospital or about 20 kms to the Primary Health Center in Panchari. The worst affected are the people living in the Kainth and Dubbi villages. Vijay Singh a local resident, the less frequency of bus service in these villages further forces to hire private vehicles to reach nearby health care facility. "The old and pregnant mothers living in the remote areas are the worst suffers as bumpy ride on hilly terrain give them a nightmarish experience."
