Decide Where You Stand Now
Why shouldn't Jammuites keep a distance from Team NC?
9/27/2015 11:01:29 PM
Things are definitely not what they are by themselves. Things are so in human context. Something could be ordinary or even vulgar - alternatively, full of grace and even divine - within specific contexts. When we strive to create peace and grace in our lives, we need to create appropriate contexts. For that, we need to use the right vehicles, which precisely lead to positivity, grace, peace and communal brotherhood on earth. Tolerance is of paramount importance, but equally important is respect for each other's feelings. Our majority politicians in J&K, however, lack all these qualities. Instead of showing farsightedness to establish peace and avoid bloodshed on earth, they take the steps which help them to regain their lost constituencies notwithstanding the widespread unrest that gets generated by their actions.
In J&K, there exist many anti-peace forces whose only job is to disturb peace and spread hatred. While people work hard to progress, these forces burn midnight oil to find out ways to murder peace. And, this would continue to happen till we get governments in J&K and at the Centre which have the will to establish authority of law in the state. For this, the present set of politicians needs to be replaced by a new breed of politicians which wants to see people progressing and not fighting among themselves. In this era of development, people want to give the best education to their children and not guns in their hands; they want their children to become officers and not militants. Those (including Hurriyat), who are known for giving guns to these children to kill their own people, would one day get punished for spoiling them. They may escape law but society would definitely punish them for spoiling these children.
So, instead of indulging in impassioned rhetoric and insincere, meaningless and exaggerated talk in public, this is the time when politicians should give the proof of their wisdom and prefer peace to unrest. But, the reverse of it is happening in J&K. For example, take the case of NC's stalwarts. After the beef ban row, they made no contribution to end the controversy but did the "undesired" work of adding fuel to the fire when they said the laws banning the cow slaughter and sale of beef in J&K be repealed as it is a Muslim majority state. Ali Mohammad Sagar, obviously with the consent of Farooq Abdullah and his son Omar Abdullah, submitted a bill in the assembly secretariat, demanding the repeal of the anti-beef law. While doing so, they did not think even for a while about the religious sentiments of the people of sprawling Jammu constituency. They did not think for a while that cow is a sacred animal for the people of Jammu. This shows that the valley-centric NC gives zero importance to their Team Jammu and the people of Jammu. They take Jammu and its Team Jammu for granted.
When, in the forthcoming assembly session, NC's Sagar and other Valley MLAs would be making impassioned speeches in favour of the cow slaughter and against the beef sale ban in J&K, what would be the condition of MLA Devinder Singh Rana and NC's other Jammu leaders? Would they stand by the party or walk out of the House clandestinely to keep their political masters in good humour? This remains to be seen. But, their reaction would matter a lot for their political survival in their respective Jammu constituencies. Even if they remain neutral, it would be difficult for them to face their own family elders who worship cows? More than anyone else, they would be answerable to themselves first. Almost in every Jammu family, elders have been telling children the stories from Vedas and other Hindu religious books about the sacred status of cows in our society.
If NC, which has been getting a sizeable number of votes from Jammu, can move a bill to repeal the law banning cow slaughter and beef sale in J&K, people of Jammu region feel that they are also within their right to keep a distance from the party and party activists in future. It would also be judicious for them to keep a distance from BJP, which has bartered the interests of Jammuites to remain in power. So, instead of sending them to the assembly, the time has come when Jammuites should decisively look for the alternative.
NC has to decide where does it stand in Jammu after submitting the bill, challenging ban on cow slaughter and beef sale in J&K? There is so much of resentment against the party heads and its valley leaders among the NC cadres in Jammu. Many of them, who had unsuccessfully contested the 2014 state polls from Jammu, may also be quitting the party over its unwelcome stand on the beef row. While they strongly feel that the party has done the wrong thing by deciding to go against the Jammu sentiments, they need to be reminded that NC had also hurt Jammu during the 2008 Amarnath land row when Omar had opposed the transfer of land in the valley to Shri Amarnath Shrine Board for raising temporary shelters for pilgrims. The party has the history of taking a plunge into the controversies for political benefits only and not for the purpose of finding out remedies. Its leaders, who, of course, lack statesmanship and the wisdom in managing the public affairs, must shun their petty political interests and suggest steps for the establishment of peace in the otherwise restive J&K.
But, NC has made one thing clear that it wants to confine itself to the valley limits only and is not bothered even if its base gets further weakened in Jammu.
Such an approach of the NC "bigwigs" shows that they lack statesmanship and and does not like to expand its political boundaries to Jammu too.
