Mehbooba displays her political craft by refusing to jump to CM's chair | | | Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Jan 9: Giving a lie to the hopes of her father's Cabinet colleagues, who somehow wanted to retain their chairs even at the immense emotional costs of the Chief Minister designate, her father's natural successor, Mehbooba Mufti has refused to take reins of power. In all probability she is likely to take oath on Jan 12th, the 80th birth day of her illustrious father. According to highly placed party sources, several Cabinet colleagues of the deceased Chief Minister, who had been thriving on exploiting his sincerity and an insatiable urge to deliver in quickest possible time, tried to create a feel of a "constitutional crisis", by planting stories in local media, quoting little-known lawyers, that if the successor did not take over immediately, the State would be plunged in to an "intractable constitutional crisis!" But the natural successor to her father, who was blessed with immense political wisdom and State craft, Mehbooba kept her cool and showed no urgency to take over before his Chahrum was observed and did not fall in to their trap! Today the opportunist Cabinet colleagues of the late Chief Minister are wearing long faces. According to keen observers some of the Cabinet colleagues from PDP have already given up hope of retaining power. "They are in a State of depression as is evident from their coming out in old garments ostensibly to give a feel of abject shock 'as a sequel to the death of their leader'!," said an observer privy to condolence meetings being held at Mehbooba's Fairview residence. "The opportunist ex-Ministers who were in a perpetual "stiff-neck" syndrome have suddenly become suave, soft-spoken and friendly to party workers and Aam Aadmi whom they dismissed as non-entities till the other day," quipped a party worker from PDP's South Kashmir bastion, Anantnag. Meanwhile Mehbooba is understood to have started consultations with her party colleagues besides being in touch with coalition party leaders. There is a strong urge in party rank and file that if Mehbooba wants to give an efficient administration to the State and live to the expectations of the party cadres and masses, she should go for drastic changes in her Cabinet including dropping some self-seeking Ministers from both the coalition partners, some of whom have already earned a bad name to the coalition Government by resorting to unfair means and practices while others have created unprecedented huge liabilities without any budgetry provisions, which are now posing a serious challenge to the Government. A well meaning section of the party wants Muzaffar Hussain Beigh in the Mehbooba's Cabinet to create an aura of governance and stability, said party sources. "He alone can deal with precarious financial status of the State after the present incumbent had failed to deliver," sources said. The urge for change is becoming stronger with every passing day and the cries for change are going to become shriller after Chahrum of late Mufti Sayeed. The insiders in PDP want Mehbooba to take every step cautiously and rope in the MLAs who were left high and dry during previous Government formation by "baseless Ministers", new to politics. "She should also keep in check the overdoing office bearers of PDP who had lost elections due to their high-handedness and pugnacious behavior," said a party insider. "Mehbooba is expected to build bridges rather than cause any further erosion in the party with her staying connected to party cadres and accessibility to Aam Aadmi," he added. |
