Despite DDC's order, FIR in death of aquatic life in Mendhar pond 'nowhere'

Poonch, June 29: Despite directions from District Development Commissioner (DDC) Poonch to take cognizance in mysterious death of large number of fish and other water animals in Mendhar pond yet the no arrest has been made in this regard though claimed that 11 persons have been identified in connections to kill fish by using poison.
Official sources said following the new items appeared in Early Times on the other day, a team from Poonch was deputed by the Fisheries Department comprising Inspector Fisheries Surankote Mendhar Range Shabir Ahmed, Sr Extension Officer Mohd Aslam and Inspector Zahir Ahmed Khan landed in Mendhar and took the stock of the situation.
"During their inquiry fisheries guard Mendhar Ghulam Mustafa revealed how the poison is used by some locals to kill the water animals, official sources said, adding that atleast 11 persons in this connection have also been identified for their alleged involvement in a gruesome act."
Sources added the team approached the SHO Mendhar Anzar Mir and apprised him about the whole matter ironically the SHO refused to take any action asserting that there was not any relevant section under which the accused could be booked.
"Instead he suggested the team to fine the accused, source said.
Meanwhile district development commissioner MH Malik expressed his anguish over the lackadaisical approach of police and said, "by using poisonous substance to kill the fish and other water animals and pollute the water of a pond, as per law criminal proceeding are to be initiated against the accused."
DCC Poonch said there is no provision to take any lenient view in such a case hence FIR is warranted. "But the things on ground reality are different as the FIR is still far from reality, sources said, adding, there is resentment brewing among people over the inaction from police.
Meantime Early Times contacted Assistant Director Fisheries Poonch, Bodh Raj in this connection who briefly said that Rs 1000 has been recovered from the tax accused and they have been warned to abstain from the practice in future.
