Early Times Report
Srinagar, Feb 15: The un- scientific waste management around Srinagar Airport is causing threat to Air Traffic near Srinagar airport according to reliable sources. Sources have told Early Times that huge garbage dumps can be found in several habitations located near the Srinagar International Airport where hundreds of birds can be found who are a major threat to commercial flights operating from Srinagar airport.
Details available with Early Times reveal that in at least one dozen habitations from Humhama to Budgam via Kralpora , Wathoora , Lalgam , Buchroo , Gadsathoo and Panzan at least 3 dozen garbage dumps can be found on the banks of Doodh Ganga and Shali Ganga nallahas. Animal carcasses are also dumped near the rivers and nallahas in these areas sources say.Hundreds of birds like crows , vultures and eagles visit these garbage dumps. Sources in Srinagar airport and Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) have also shown their concern to this un scientific waste management. "Out of these 6 to 7 habitations only few habitations in Humhama and Rangreth are looked after by Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC). SMC is also not undertaking scientific solid waste management in its areas located in ward 33, " said an employee (name withheld)
Sources have told Early Times that inside the airport and air force stations the waste management work is undertaken by SMC and locally hired contractors who also do not follow the scientific waste management rules. Nobody knows where they dump the garbage collected from various areas of Srinagar airport area.
As reported already Commissioner Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) had claimed that SMC launched waste collection in segregated form in around 6 municipal wards of city from January 10 but this turned out to be a mere hoax and a bundle of lies. The scientific waste collection as mandated under Solid Waste Rules 2016 is not at all undertaken by SMC even in 1 municipal ward of Srinagar.
In villages and rural areas located outside Srinagar Airport the waste management work is supposed to be undertaken by Rural Sanitation Department under its SBM Grameen project but the rural sanitation department according to officials of Rural Development Department (RDD) have failed to spend even a single rupees on waste management in rural areas as not a single DPR has gone to Govt of India for getting gets funds to execute this work in J&K. "SBM Grameen was launched in 2014 October and till date not even a rupee has been spend in any block of Budgam district " said an official in DC Office Budgam.
