'Unguided' education turns students' career murky
Experts demand special policy
6/3/2018 10:30:41 PM
Early Times Report
Srinagar, June 3: Due to lack of counselling and proper guidance, students in Jammu and Kashmir are caught in the middle as they end up in choosing unknown careers without the basic knowledge of the profession making their future murky.
Every year the state produces theoretical literates at various schools, colleges and universities who at the end fail to contribute to the socio-economic development of the society.
"The education in the state should be encouraged as per the latest needs and demands of the society. A student is always in need of proper counselling all the time and the government should work out some constructive plans to abridge all the communication gaps," said a research scholar Bilal Ahmad. Every individual is different and not everyone can be a doctor or an engineer but choosing a field of study that is not really suited to one's interests could prove disastrous. So, proper career counselling can help students to discover their true potential and interest in various subjects so that they can choose the right career.
"Students should consult the persons which are already attached with that profession which can act as a great source of information, before deciding any future profession. But, the trend in Kashmir is reverse as the students suffer largely due to the unguided education," Bilal said.
Observers in the field said that education works best when one focuses on thinking and understanding, rather than on rote memorization. "A guided learning approach requires rather more efforts in the preparation of materials than a more conventional. The JK is in dire need of a skilled workforce which can create ample job or self- reliant opportunities," said Ghulam Mohammad a college teacher.
Learning is a process that requires a combination of different methods depending on the knowledge being passed on.
"Careers are actually to be planned and those who don't have any organised thought prior to selection of their career would end up in uncertain and risky futures," he said.
He said that it is high time for schools to start the information and career counselling among their students right from the eight class so that a student can get rapo with counselling and develop an organised mindset from the beginning.
"Government should at least assign one counsellor and a psychologist to create awareness about the importance of counselling and prepare a psychological graph of each student," he added.
Experts said that more and more counselling centres should be started in the state and provide them with the proper guidance so that students could easily choose their careers without any confusion. "Today students are highly stressed due to the cut throat competition and unemployment in the valley. The stress and depression are the effects of incorrect career selection for a student," said Dr Nazir.
"If a student can get counselling at the right time, he can easily enjoy working and scaling new heights without lack of interests," he added.
