srinagar, June 15: Jammu & Kashmir Police today claimed to have arrested a person suspected to be involved in the assassination of veteran journalist, Syed Shujaat Bukhari and two of his Personal Security Officers (PSOs) at the Press Enclave here yesterday in the evening.
Addressing a press conference, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir Range, Swayam Prakash Pani said that the suspect identified as Zubair Qayoom resident of Kanitar-Saderbal, Srinagar was arrested after a video surfaced in which he is seen decamping with a pistol of one of the PSOs.
"In the investigation of the case FIR number 51/2018 pertaining to yesterday's terror attack at Press Enclave, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted for probing the matter, which will be headed by DIG CKR. In this regard a suspect who was earlier seen in a video picking up a pistol of the injured cop from scene of crime has been identified as Zubair Qayoom R/O. Saderbal," said the IGP.
The IGP said that the suspect has been taken into custody and the said pistol has been recovered from his possession besides the clothes that he was wearing at that time were also recovered on his disclosure. He said the complicity of the said individual in the assassination of Shujaat and two PSOs is being investigated.
"At this stage we are investigating the role of the fourth suspect who was seen picking up the weapon from the spot and vanishing. As far as the case is concerned at this stage it is a terror incident. It is a terrorist related crime," said the IGP.
Police investigations suggest that there are more than three persons directly involved in the assassination. Police has issued two pictures seeking peoples' help in identification and arrest. In one set of pictures, the police sought identification of three bikers fleeing away with their faces hooded or concealed.
In another picture, they are seeking help in arresting one bearded young man who was on the spot till the police arrived. He later fled with a pistol of one of the two slain cops. The latter person who was included in the list of suspects was trying to take the bodies out. He continued their till the police reached the spot.
When the body of the driver was being evacuated, a pistol fell down and he pounced on it and kept in his pocket. This happened in presence of police, as a video shot on the spot shows. Later the same guy is seen fleeing on motor-cycle with such a speed that he somehow escaped unhurt.
The pictures were released earlier in the day while as the video went viral on social networking site like WhatsApp. The pictures were shared by the Srinagar Police with the force seeking cooperation of the people to identify the trio of people involved in the killing of Shujaat.
Shujaat was assassinated while he was boarding his vehicle at Press Enclave on Thursday evening. While one of his PSOs got killed on the spot yet another PSO succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
