Disgruntled members to celebrate party's raising day separately
Madni's resignation unlikely to help PDP
7/23/2018 10:46:13 PM
Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, July 23: Despite resignation by Sartaj Madni as vice president of the Peoples Democratic Party, there seems no end to crisis in the party, as its disgruntled leaders have decided to celebrate party's foundation day separately.
Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and PDP president Mehbooba Mufti has decided to a show of strength to mark the foundation day of the PDP on July 28 in the face of a revolt within the party's ranks.
However, the rebel leaders have decided to stay away from PDP activities. This is despite the fact that Madni, uncle of Mehbooba, on Monday resigned as the vice-president of the PDP.
Madni's resignation came as several PDP MLAs had accused Mufti of nepotism and questioned her decision to surround herself with her relatives and friends in the party.
"We (rebels) will celebrate the party foundation day separately," several disgruntled leaders confirmed to Early Times. "We are the real leaders of the party. Mehbooba Mufti as president is not acceptable to majority of the PDP leaders," they said.
Sources said that Madni had resigned as an effort within the PDP to bring back the disgruntled legislators. "Resignation of rebel leaders was one of the demands of disgruntled leaders. There are several other demands like Mehbooba shall be step down a party president which is not acceptable to her," a PDP leader said.
Mehbooba has been making efforts to keep her flock of 28 legislators together. However, the disgruntled leaders are staying away from party activities. In the last few weeks, Mehbooba has started closed door meeting with senior party functionaries and legislators. This is an effort to ensure all the legislators stay with the party in the wake of rebellion within the PDP by some of the MLAs and MLCs.
Five rebel legislators-Imran Ansari, Javaid Beigh, Abdul Majeed Padroo, Yasir Reshi, and Saifuddin Bhat-last week also addressed a joint press conference where they called Mehbooba "incompetent" to head the party.
There are speculations that the Modi government was trying to stitch a government by wooing the PDP rebels.
At least seven PDP leaders have spoken against the Mehbooba after the fall of the government. The rebel leaders have said they were still part of the PDP.
"We are still a part of PDP until a 'show cause' notice and other official action is taken. Nobody can label us as agents of New Delhi. Are Mehbooba and Omar only speaking truth in Kashmir?," Imran Ansari had said in the press conference.
Imran, the former IT and Higher Education Minister has said, "PDP and the government had of late been reduced to a family opera where the brothers, the uncles, the aunties and other relatives would play protagonist and to continue with such a party was not only useless but a humiliation too."
