Early Times Report
KUPWARA, July 25: The Government Degree College for Women in Sulkoot, Kupwara is in a dilapidated condition, raising questions on the government's much-hyped slogan of 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao.'
The 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao' is a flagship programme run by the central government to ensure survival, protection and education of the girl child.
"The idea may be noble, but it seems that the scheme has not been able to achieve its objectives at least in Kupwara," said Shaista Akhter (name changed), a student of the Kupwara college.
She said the condition of the classrooms of the Women's College is pathetic and the girls are forced to take their classes there for hours together.
There are nearly 700 girl students pursuing studies in different subjects in the college. They come from far of places of this border district but face inconvenience in the absence of adequate facilities.
"One fails to understand how the authorities accommodate such a huge roll in these dilapidated classrooms," said the students.
Irony is that no district official or officers from the administration have ever bothered to visit the college to check the condition of classrooms or the college building.
"The Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao is mere a hollow slogan and the authorities in Kupwara have ensured that it remain so," the students said.
They said it seems that the executing agency and higher education department are not in a position to complete two or three blocks, where this institution could run smoothly.
The college students have appealed the Governor, N N Vohra to intervene into the matter so that the centrally sponsored scheme could be made effective here.
