Speaking at the inaugural ceremony of Krishi Vigyaan Kendra (KVK) Budgam on Saturday, Ganai said that agriculture sector has a tremendous potential to offer jobs to youth provided they understand and explore this sector and get involved into various agri related activities on commercial basis . Khurshid Ahmad Ganai who is also looking after Agriculture Production department in J&K had been invited by Sher e Kashmir University of Agriculture Sciences Srinagar (SKUAST) to formally throw open Krishi Vigyaan Kendra (KVK) at Budgam for which land was acquired two years back near Harran village in Budgam district. Vice Chancellor of SKUAST (K) Prof Nazeer Ahmad while welcoming Mr Khurshid Ganai gave a detailed background of KVKs activities and role of SKUAST (K).
The concept to create Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) ie Agriculture Science Centres was developed by Indian Council for Agriculture Research (ICAR) many decades back . The KVKs work under various agriculture universities across India. In Jammu & Kashmir SKUAST Kashmir and Jammu have KVKs in almost all the districts. KVK is an integral part of the National Agricultural Research System (NARS) which aims at assessment of location specific technology modules in agriculture and allied enterprises, through technology assessment, refinement & demonstrations. KVKs have been functioning as Knowledge and Resource Centre of agricultural technology supporting initiatives of public, private and voluntary sector for improving the agricultural economy. One of the oldest KVK in Kashmir is located at Malangpora Pulwama which was established in the year 1983. In 2002 KVK Ganderbal was set up by SKUAST (K). This centre is not only taking care of agriculture and horticulture sectors, but a young scientist Dr Parvez Nabi is doing an exemplary work on backyard poultry as well. He has conceptualized a system called horti-poultry at KVK Ganderbal's Shuhma campus. KVK Ganderbal has more than 300 poultry birds of different varieties specially the cross breed Vanraja. Horti -Poultry is system to optimize resource utilization and enhance returns by way of reducing the purchase of poultry feed. The birds are left open in apple orchards to get the necessary nutrition from the worms and other food material.
Prof Nazeer while speaking at the function congratulated KVK Budgam head Dr Naseer for his exemplary work. He lauded Dr Naseer for his role in constructing KVKs main administrative building and modern laboratory within a record time of 1 year .
