Patel and Kashmir
YR Gupta10/31/2018 8:45:37 PM
Sardar was the clearest advocate of support to a Maharaja pleading for the life of his subjects. He added firmly that he saw nothing to prevent India from sending armed assistance whether or not the State had acceeded. (Oct. 25 )
In the crucial meeting in Nehru's house when Nehru was hesitant for sending soldiers Mahajan said that he would seek Jinnaha's help Nehru reacted by asking Mahajan "go away ". The Kashmir premier got up to leave but the SARDAR stopped him saying "of course Mahajan you are not going to Pakistan".
It was PATEL"s clarity and persuation that ended Nehru's indecision and Menon was directed to return atonce to Kashmir and tell the Maharaja that the Indian Army was on its way.
The SARDAR was at the Airfield on Oct. 27 watching air lifting of the Army in his presence and was there through out. About 700 raiders made a sneak attack on Srinagar Air port on Nov. 3 . They were however pushed back by our brave soldiers. The SARDAR made his journey to Kashmir the following morning - five days after his birthday.
He remained engaged earlier forgetting or say ignoring to celebrate his own Birthday.
Events took a decisive turn after this vist of PATEL. He did not loose a minute even to study the situation and ordered that enemy must be driven back. Maj. Gen Kulwant Singh with hundreds of soldiers were flown to Srinagar the next day .
Baramula freed on November 8. The town bore terrible marks of the raiders. " arson, and pillage, loot and rape." In the last week of Lctober 1947 " Gadgil has recalled Patel took out a map and pointing to the Pathankot - Jammu area said that the 65 miles road between the two towns had to be made capable of heavy Army traffic with in next eight months.
PATEL flew to Jammu again on December 2 to promote cordiallity betwèen the Maharaja and Sheikh. The bid was however unsuccessful since for by now the Sheikh wanted his defacto Premiership be formally recognized. The Sheikh had the full support of Nehru who wrote to the Maharaja on December 2 that Sheikh should be the Prime Minister and should be asked be asked to form the Government and Mr. Mahajan can be one of the Ministers and can formally preside over the Cabinet.
It is with this letter that Nehru took over the shaping of India's Kashmir Policy, a role thus for played by SARDAR PATEL as Minister of States.
At this stage Nehru decided to manage Kashmir himself. The SARDAR PATEL stepped aside the moment Nehru expressed the wish to stand in his place. And so with this change KASHMIR remains a problem and we are made to suffer through and through ON HIS BIRTHDAY TODAY . We pay TRIBUTE to the saver of Kashmir and the man who United INDIA.
