KU 'violates' norms, varsity to hold exams during winter vacations
Students, staff seek Guv Malik's intervention
12/6/2018 11:14:20 PM
Early Times Report
srinagar, Dec 6: In alleged violation of norms, the Kashmir University (KU) has decided to hold exams for the post-graduate courses during the winter vacations drawing flak from students and faculty members.
Official sources said academic calendar has been issued for holding of exams for the third-semester students from the first week of January 2019.
But the varsity is likely to go for winter break from ending December 2018 till March 2019. The decision to hold exams during winter break has drawn severe criticism from the faculty members who said holding exams during vacations was against the guidelines of the University Grants Commission(UGC).
"How can you hold exams during vacations? This means the staff will have to be present here even during vacations and this is a violation of the UGC guidelines," said a delegation of faculty members on the condition of anonymity.
Sources said the office of the Vice-Chancellor took the allegedly "illogical" decision after consultations with some of the faculty members who enjoy accommodation as provided by the varsity at its Hazratbal campus here.
"Basically some higher ups wanted some of their 'favorite' staff members to be close to their eyes even during winter break and thus decided to opt for exams during this period," said a delegation of teachers on the condition of anonymity.
The teachers said they are drafting detailed memorandum to the UGC to apprise them about the "falling standards of academics" at the varsity.
"The varsity is divided into two groups of faculty members. One is favorite of the office of the VC and their requests even if illogical things are not turned down whereas the other group is of those who remain unheard for logical argument as has happened in this case of issuing academic calendar for exams during the winter vacations," said the delegation of the teachers.
The students on the other hand said that appearing in exams was not feasible for them during January. "I live in a remote area where road network remains snapped during winter snowfall. Does the KU want me to spend extra money to stay in Srinagar during vacations," said a student.
When contacted a senior official in the KU said the decision to hold exams during winters was illogical. "January is the month of extreme cold and snowfall, holding exams in such biting cold will only lead to chaos, but then some of the officials have opted for it for reasons better known to them and you better ask them," said the official on the condition of anonymity. But the concerned didn't respond to phone calls.
Meanwhile the KU staff and the students have appealed Governor SP Malik to personally look into the matter.
