Sanction of underground bunkers for border dwellers still awaited | | | S T Haq Early Times Report srinagar, Dec 8: Despite GOI having given sanction for underground bunkers for border residents who are dying daily because of unprovoked firing from Pakistan, the promises were never fulfilled so for. Reliable sources while talking to early times said that, " in the past, the former Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti had claimed that the central government had sanctioned construction of over fourteen thousand underground bunkers, but the promises were never fulfilled by the GOI nor by the state government. Sources while quoting the former chief minister as having said that, the union home ministry had given a sanction for construction of bunkers in December 2017. However, the union ministry has asked the government to specify building norms for all areas up to five kilometer from the border and priority will given to bunkers which are nearest to the existing border, said sources. Sources said that recently there was an unprovoked firing and shelling from Pakistani side in two districts of north Kashmir and shelling has created fear psychosis among the residents of border areas that has compelled them to move to safe places. Thousands of people are living in these vulnerable zones and number of families is residing close to the Line of Control (LoC) and unfortunately the army from other side is targeting the Indian posts which are sometimes missing and hits the civilian areas. We know how fear creeps in when the sun sets as these hamlets come under intense shelling by the neighbour's army, our property and lives remains at stake due to exchange of fire from both the sides, sources said. Mohammad Shafi and others from Machil said that, "many times in the past we have fled homes, and now it has become a daily routine for us as border people live in the jaws of deaths". "One never knows what is going to happen the next moment, LoC can heat up anytime, but we are the real sufferers and government is hardly bothered about our fate, said a group people from Tangdar area of Kupwara district. Another group of people from Uri sector said that if the government wants to construct bunkers for the safeguard of border people, then they must not delay in the construction work. But the fact of the matter is the government has failed to keep the promise of setting up community bunkers for border dwellers, they said. They said that, in the coming months, these ministers, local MLAs will come to us and will beg for votes, but let them forget about it now, the time has changed, they have always made us fool for their votes. Pertinently one army soldier was martyred after India and Pakistan exchanged heavy fire and shelling along the Line of Control in Machil and Uri sector of north Kashmir since Wednesday morning. |
