SKUAST-Jammu scientists register new Goat breed | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Dec 14: The Faculty of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry, R. S. Pura (SKUAST-Jammu) registered a New Goat Breed named 'Bhakarwali' with Accession Number INDIA_GOAT_0700_Bhakarwali_06034 from Jammu province of Jammu and Kashmir State under the patronage of Indian Council of Agricultural Research-National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources (ICAR-NBAGR), Karnal, Haryana. This is the 34th registered goat breed of the country. The name Bhakarwali or Bakerwali is given on the name of the community rearing the population. This is the first goat breed registered for Jammu province which is mainly migratory in nature and can withstand all vagaries of weather and known for sustainability of nomadic communities rearing the breed. The breed is famous for good quality chevon. The Animal Breed Registration Certificates were distributed by Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Radha Mohan Singh in presence of other Ministers of State for Agriculture namely Gajendra Singh Sekhawat, Krishna Raj and Purusuttam Rupala in a glittering ceremony held on December 12 at Krishi Bhavan in New Delhi to Dr. R. K. Taggar, Professor and Head and Dr. Dibyendu Chakraborty, Assistant Professor of the division of Animal Genetics and Breeding of SKUAST-Jammu who were pioneer workers in the breed registration. |
