SRINAGAR, Dec 16: The newly elected councilors of Srinagar Municipal Corporation have started to shed crocodile tears vis-à-vis their honorarium and said the honorarium being paid to them is too meagre. The honorarium concern was raised by the councilors during the second session of the newly elected representatives of SMC held at SKICC on Saturday. The councilors including Mayor Junaid Azim Mattu and Deputy Mayor Sheikh Imran said that since their honorarium is too less the same should be increased so that they live a decent life. Sources told Early Times that during the meeting the councilors used their energy and time in discussing the salary issue rather than deliberating on important issues concerning the resident of summer capital of Jammu & Kashmir. Very little concern was shown towards the problems of people and not to talk of solution of such problems.
"It seemed that the sole agenda of the meeting was the salary package of the councilors since the issue was discussed threadbare during the meeting. The developmental issues concerning the people of Srinagar were relegated to the back burner and very little consideration was given towards the same," said sources.
Sources said that some of the councilors made it clear that it would be difficult for them to carry on as elected representatives of their wards since the honorarium being paid to them is too small. They demanded that the honorarium should be increased failing which it would be difficult to go ahead.
"Nobody is against the decent salary package to the councilors of SMC but for the same it is important that these people show their mettle first. Let them first devote their attention to the problems of people in their respective areas. Once they are able to make any difference then they are entitled to demand more from the concerned department," said sources.
Meanwhile, Media Relations Officer SMC, Masrat Yousuf in a statement said that second session of general council of SMC was held at SKICC. The welcome address was presented by Mayor Srinagar Junaid Azim Mattu.
"Joint Commissioner Administration, Abdul Majeed Raina gave a preview presentation which was immediately followed by Solid Waste Management presentation delivered by Waste Management officer Nadir Ahmad Baba. Commissioner SMC also highlighted the various challenges that have to be taken for improvisation of Solid Waste Management," said SMC Media Relations Officer.
Masrat said that various issues regarding different projects of Solid Waste Management including waste segregation, revival of dog sterilization and implementation of ban on polythene program were discussed at length.
"Deputy Mayor Sheikh Imran also highlighted significant role of corporators in raising core issues of their wards with regard to sanitation, waste segregation, street lighting and work to their best of abilities to take these issues to the logical end. During the meeting presentation on council affairs and transaction of business of the Corporation was also given," said Masrat.
