Early Times Report
Jammu, Dec 18: Jammu and Kashmir Police has got itself in the midst of a major controversy, allegedly for granting VIP security to a Kashmiri businessman reportedly flouting the norms of assessing security threat perception to an individual.
Official sources in the Raj Bhawan said that a rich businessman who is neither a politician nor a bureaucrat has been unduly given "Y-Category" security and that a good number of policemen were at his disposal.
Sources said the businessman had approached some senior officials in the Security wing of the Jammu and Kashmir Police requesting good security cover from police as it would help him to elevate his influence in the society in Kashmir.
"Enjoying security cover from police has become a new status symbol in a section of society in Kashmir and thus such moneyed people can do anything to get more and more security even as they have no such security threat," said a senior official close to the Raj Bhawan on the condition of anonymity.
Sources said the businessman, who runs business of manufacturing spices, has been given the undue security cover even without clearance from the concerned committee.
Some of the businessmen in Kashmir have taken a serious note of the said development and are mulling to knock the doors of Raj Bhawan. Sources said New Delhi was contemplating to seek a report from the Raj Bhawan as to how police protection was being given to such people.
Early Times learnt that there were more cases wherein security cover was provided to individuals in complete contravention of norms.
Officials in the Home Department of J&K Government said "under no circumstances, Y Category or Z category security can be granted without requisite nod from the government."
They said such cases seeking are scrutinized by the screening committee that only has the authority to recommend such cases to the government for final approval.
Sources said the Advisor on Home affairs, K Vijay Kumar will be asked to seek an explanation from the Jammu and Kashmir Police on the issue. The said businessman is already under scanner for his business deals and proximity with some of the politicians and separatists.
"There is a need to screen all such cases because we cannot allow misuse of our policemen for appeasement of the rich and mighty in Kashmir," said a source in the police department on the condition of anonymity.
A police official however said, it was not that big an issue. "Provisional Y security can be provided in cases where the department finds it appropriate," the official said.
