SRINAGAR, Dec 27: Newly elected Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Srinagar are doing no service towards development of Srinagar, summer capital of Jammu & Kashmir. In other words it can be said that they are doing disservice to the people of Srinagar.
Both the Mayor Junaid Azim Mattu and Deputy Mayor Sheikh Imran are conducting separate tours to the different areas of Srinagar city. The separate tours by the Mayor and Deputy Mayor have put the officials of Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) into a quandary and they don't whom to listen to and whom to ignore.
Sources told Early Times that Junaid and Imran are at loggerheads on certain issues and the controversy between the two gets reflected every now and then. It has also been observed that the Mayor and Deputy Mayor want to take credit for the things which are supposed to be done by them in a collective manner.
"Today the Mayor visited the various areas of Srinagar and he issued directions to the officials accompanying him. Ideally he should have been accompanied by the Deputy Mayor but that was not to be. The presence of Deputy Mayor was imperative since he too conducted visit of some areas of the city some days back," said sources.
Sources said that since Mayor and Deputy Mayor constitute a small team it is important that both of them take decisions united and not separately. However, they said that both of them are working in opposite directions thus compromising the developmental needs of the summer capital of Jammu & Kashmir.
"Since the Mayor and Deputy Mayor belong to two different political parties it is quite natural that they would work in opposite direction. Both Junaid and Imran should have kept their political ideologies at bay and they should have worked in unison. However, they are yet to do and by the time they understand their responsibilities the people of Srinagar would have to suffer," said sources.
It would be in place to mention here that Deputy Mayor landed into a major controversy when he manhandled a doctor at a city hospital just few days back. The issue was settled only after Imran tendered apology to the doctor when Doctors Association of Kashmir (DAK) raised a banner of revolt against him. He also faced a rebuke from Lakes & Waterways Development Authority (LAWDA) when he said that SMC is involved in cleaning of world famous Dal Lake.
In the meantime, a press release issued by Media Relations Officer SMC, Masrat Yousuf said that Mayor Srinagar along with senior officers of Corporation visited various areas of the city including Hassanabad, Kathidarwaza, Pokhribal, Dadibagh, Hawal, Sheikh Colony Kanidewar, Umar Colony Lal Bazar and Saderbal to take stock of sanitation and various works under process.
"While touring Pokhribal area Mayor on receiving several complaints from public passed on directions to conduct water analysis of a water treatment plant located at Pokhribal. He said that successive governments have not been able to provide basic amenities like sanitation, clean drinking water facilities, clean roads, safe distribution of power network and hygienic conditions of living to Shehri-Khaas," said Media Relations Officer SMC.
