Kashmir, Cable-Operators continue to violate TRAI norms | | | Saahil Suhail Early Times Report Srinagar, Feb 28: A year after digital switch-over, cable operators across Kashmir continue to transmit analog signals over their networks in remote and far-flung areas. The cable operators are also denying the subscribers the option of choosing channels in gross violations of TRAIs regulations. According to reports, cable operators in far off areas of Kashmir haven't yet completed the digitalization and are operating and transmitting analog signals over their networks in violation of the norms. They said that cable operators are still using analog signals, instead of installing set-top boxes. The Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Amendment Act, 2011 had mandated a complete switch-over of the analog cable TV networks to digital addressable system (DAS) in four phases. Phase IV was officially completed on 31 March 2017, however in Kashmir's remote areas cable operators are yet to complete the process. In town areas of valley, cable operators are denying subscribers the right of choosing channels in the 'Basic Package' and other gross violations of TRAIs regulations. A number of people have sought the intervention of authorities and urged Divisional Commissioner Kashmir to stop blatant exploitation of Cable TV subscribers by the Local Cable Operators. "Instead of giving choice to choose the channels to the consumers, the cable operators unilaterally imposed a pre-defined bouquet and charge 200 to 300 Rupees for them," they said. Divisional Commi-ssioner Kashmir, Baseer Ahmad Khan has taken a strong note of the blatant violation of TRAI regulations and has directed Deputy Commissioners to take against the violators. He has also sought an action taken report from the Deputy Commissioners within ten days. |
