MC continues to dump wastage on Wullar banks | Govt clueless on scientific disposal | | S T Haq Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Feb 28: Thanks to the recent snowfall that has blanketed the heaps of garbage in and around the largest lake of Aisa, and the work of the of MC has also been reduced to some extent as they have taken a nap over their faults. According to sources, Wular Lake that is being considered amongst the largest lakes in Asia, is shrinking, polluted, encroached at an alarming speed and garbage dumps have sullied the picturesque view of the lake at large. "The waste material in tones including the toxic waste of hospitals/hotels and restaurants, and the wastage from small business units is either thrown directly or dumped in the nearby villages that are located near the banks of Wullar Lake", said sources. Sources said that there are dozens of adjoining villages to Wullar Lake including Watlab, Kemah, Garoora, Brar, Duroo Sopore, Mansbal, Bangladesh Colony and other low lying areas that are also involved in the pollution of this famous lake. From time to time, amount worth crores was sanctioned for the restoration of this lake by the Govt of India (GoI) and state govt in past as well, but one fails to understand that why the amount was not spent in a proper way. They said that due to widespread reclamation and drainage of the lake and its marshes for agriculture, settlements and plantations took place and this has contributed to shrinkage of the lake area and degradation of the natural resources it provides to wetland dependent communities. Meanwhile local residents from Nusoo area said that at present the lake has witnessed severe degradation, many parts of the lake are dumped with carcasses of animals, polythene and garbage. Few weeks back, the MC vehicle was seen carrying the garbage and other non bio-degradable waste materials after which they dumped it on the banks of Wullar Lake and the same toxic waste material gets washed away in the lake during these wintering months, and notably that got covered under the fresh snow, said locals of Watlab area. Irony is that the department concerned has failed to find a scientific mechanism for dumping solid wastes including non biodegradable items and one believes that the day is not far when Wullar Lake will remain out of Pandora box as it was never a part of Kashmir heritages. |
