Voting share of 4 political parties dips in JK

SRINAGAR, Mar 16: In what could be a worrying sign, the voting share of four major political parties has gone down in the last 15 years in Jammu and Kashmir.
The BJP had voting share of 18.61 percent in 2009 and 32.4 in 2014 Parliamentary polls, respectively. The BJP won two Parliamentary seats from Jammu and one from Ladakh in 2014 polls. However, its vote share slumped around nine percent from 33 percent in 2014 Parliamentary elections to 23 percent in the 2014 Assembly polls.
The National Conference had secured 28 percent vote share, polled 22.02 percent vote share in 2004 Lok Sabha polls, which further dipped to 19.11 percent in 2009 polls.
In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, an abrupt 8 percent decline was recorded in NC's vote share compared to the 2009 Lok Sabha polls. It polled only 11. 1 percent vote share in 2014 Parliamentary elections. The National Conference (NC) whose seat tally decreased to 15 in 2014 elections from 27 in 2008 Assembly elections.
The NC has got the vote share of 20.8 percent in the Assembly polls and 11. 1 percent vote share in 2014 Lok Sabha elections.
The vote share of Congress has also decreased over the years. In 2004 Parliamentary elections, the Congress had secured 27.83 percent vote share, which dipped to 24.67 percent in 2009 Lok Sabha polls.
While as in 2014 Parliamentary polls, the vote share of Congress slumped around 22 percent triggering an unprecedented debacle. The Congress had won two Lok Sabha seats in 2009 Parliamentary polls.
The PDP polled 11.94 in 2004 LokSabha elections, which increased to 20.5 percent in the 2009 Parliamentary elections. The PDP won all the three Parliamentary seats of the Valley in 2014 Parliamentary polls but there was not much difference in its vote share as compared to 2009 polls. In 2014 Assembly polls, its voting share went down.
There are various small parties and independent candidates, whose vote share has gone up over the years.
The political parties have started the election campaigning to lure the electorate to vote for their candidates.
The Lok Sabha election in Jammu and Kashmir will be held in five phases beginning April 11. The restive Anantnag parliamentary constituency, comprising Anantnag, Shopian and Kulgam districts, will go to the polls "in parts" in the third, fourth, and fifth phase.
