BJP-PDP Govt ignored graft | | | Early Times Report Jammu, June 10: At a time when anti-graft bodies are sending shivers down the spine of the corrupt in Jammu and Kashmir, reports are emerging suggesting that the previous coalition of BJP and PDP did little to keep a check on this menace at the government level. As per the insiders, the anti-graft bodies including the State Vigilance Organisation had on several occasions asked government to take series of vital measures in the government departments so that the growing cases of corruption are tamed and people could heave a sigh of relief from such measures. However, in spite of the repeated reminders by these anti- graft bodies, the government cared little and thrashed the suggestions without a single remorse. It was informed that when PDP- BJP coalition was in place that there were various vital measures that the state government was being asked to take for enhancing transparent and accountable functioning of the various government departments. There was a need felt of immediate digitization of revenue records. But, the project was never initiated at a larger level, making it difficult for the people to get their woes pertaining to the concerned department addressed on time. Installation of CCTV cameras in government offices having public dealings was another measure that the government was set to introduce to stop the corruption menace. Not even a single major office with the public dealing has so far complied with the government order. The installation of the CCTVs continues to remain a distant dream. It was informed further that other measures that were at threadbare discussed to tame the corruption include developing online mechanisms for payments by government departments; enforcing compliance of the Public Services Guarantee Act; grant of permissions, clearances and sanctions in individual cases to be made online; implementation of the Supreme Court's recommendations for promulgation of the New Police Act; amendment of the SVC Act to enforce attendance of all those persons required by the Commission for conducting enquiries; and discontinuation of interviews for recruitments to the non gazetted posts. Pertinently, the government earlier has stated that there were 8,935 complaints pending with various departments of the State Government and that the Vigilance Organisation has sent 884 cases to different government departments for departmental action "with regard to complaints in respect of which, on the basis of evidence collected, prima facie charges have been established against identified officials. "There is nothing wrong in saying that the government didn't act on those suggestions due to which the state continues even today to tread the path of corruption and the corrupt roam freely in almost every department," says an official privy to the development. He added that now when the Governor administration is taking the cases seriously, it is hoped that the suggestions to curtail corruption could be taken to the next level and implemented on ground without further delay. "There is no reason why the government shouldn't translate those suggestions into action. The previous coalition had a non- serious approach of working due to which things didn't move in a right direction," the official said. |
