Early Times Report

BARAMULLA, June 21: Scores of Pandit families in Veerwan families of Baramulla district are facing a lot of problems.
Since our accommodation here, we have faced many hardships due to neglect of authorities. Time and again we were promised stars but nothing has been done on the ground, said inhabitants of Veervan Pandit Colony (VPC) Baramulla.
The colony for these Kashmiri migrants was established in 2010 at Veerwan area in the outskirts of Baramulla town, hundreds of families are residing here these Kashmiri Pandits were settled here under Prime Ministers Special Package of Employment for Kashmiri Pandits.
Avtar Bhat, President Veervan Pandit Colony said that, their colony is in pathetic conditions due to which the inhabitants are forced to live in faulty sewerage system which creates foul smell and is totally unhygienic.
All people especially children get exposed to this faulty sewerage system that is prone to various diseases. In past we made many requests to the concerned authorities for the maintenance of these quarters, but no proper attention was paid to our pleas, Bhat told early times.
Bhat said that due to hot temperature we are suffering badly, while as there are other problems like wall fencing is open from River side, and road side fencing is also damaged which is making life of residents under serious threat, as sometimes wild animals can enter into the premises of this colony as colony is lying near forests.
Inhabitants said that the Government of India (GoI) is spending huge sum of money on developmental projects in Kashmir valley, but they are also least bothered about the problems that Kashmiri Pandits are facing.
In the recent Parliamentary elections, tall promises were made with our community, but they remain limited till the election results were declared and now those promises have got buried in 'no man's land', expressed one of the inhabitants of VPC.
They said that this colony lacks all basic facilities which were supposed to be here for the isolated migrants as we hardly move outside of this colony, the governor administration is requested to intervene into the matter and direct the authorities to visit this colony to take on spot assessment of problems.
