Darkest apprehension come true: Omar calls Centre deceitful for scrapping Article 370
8/5/2019 10:52:55 PM

Early Times Report

Srinagar, Aug 5: The government of India scrapped Article 370, which gives special powers to the state of Jammu and Kashmir on Monday.
A notification signed by President Ram Nath Kovind made Article 370 inoperative.
Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah has called the development a "total betrayal of the trust that the people of J&K had reposed in India when the State acceded to it in 1947".
National Conference leader Omar Abdullah was put under house arrest late on Sunday night as the government imposed Section 144 (unlawful assembly) in Jammu and Kashmir. Releasing an official statement, Omar Abdullah said that the central government's decisions were an "aggression against the people of the State."
Referring to the recent heavy security deployment in Jammu and Kashmir, as well as the imposition of a curfew, he said it had used "deceit and stealth to lay ground for these disastrous decisions."
Omar Abdullah also slammed J&K Governor Satyapal Malik for misleading state leaders about the Centre's intentions vis-a-vis special status to the state. After the security movement in the state, Malik had repeatedly said that no changes will be made to Article 370 and Article 35A.
"Our darkest apprehensions have unfortunately come true after the GoI and it's representatives in J&K lied to us that nothing major was planned. The announcement was announced after the entire State, particularly the Kashmir Valley, was turned into a garrison. Those of who gave democratic voice to the people of Jammu and Kashmir, are incarcerated as lakhs of armed security personnel have been put on the ground," Omar Abdullah added as he attacked the Central government.
Omar Abdullah also raised questions on Jammu and Kashmir's accession to India. He said that the state's accession to India was based on the special powers granted to it via Article 370 and Article 35A.
Stating that his party will fight the decision, the NC vice-president said, "The decisions are unilateral, unconstitutional and will be as such challenged by the National Conference."
"A long and tough battle lies ahead. We are ready for that," he concluded.
