Restrictions tightened across Kashmir to maintain law and order
5/8/2020 11:37:57 PM
Early Times Report

Srinagar, May 8: Curfew-like restrictions were further tightened in Kashmir valley on Friday as a precautionary measure in view of apprehensions about protests against the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) chief Reyaz Naikoo in an encounter with security forces. Meanwhile, people mostly students, professionals, traders and media persons continued to suffer as cellular and mobile internet services of all companies remained suspended for the third successive day today due to security reasons in Kashmir valley.
Official sources said that restrictions were tightened to prevent protests in the valley, where barbed wires have been erected in Srinagar city and other sensitive areas in the valley to restrict movement of people.
Even though Kashmir is already under third phase of COVID-19 lockdown, additional security forces have been deployed in many sensitive areas, including downtown Srinagar, to maintain law and order in the valley.
Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kashmir range, Vijay Kumar on Thursday said that the restrictions on movement and suspension of cellular and mobile internet services were necessary to maintain law and order in the valley.
Restrictions were also imposed in most parts of the valley, including Srinagar, soon after the news about Naikoo’s killing spread on Wednesday. A civilian was killed and 15 others were injured in clashes with security forces in Awantipora, the hometown of Naikoo.
Some stone pelting incidents were also reported from downtown on Wednesday. He said the situation will be reviewed and decision to restore the services would be taken accordingly.
In a major success, security forces on Wednesday killed Naikoo besides three other militants in two separate encounters which ensued after security forces launched Cordon and Search Operations (CASOs) in south Kashmir district of Pulwama.
