GHE electrifies the village of Dungti near LAC
2/7/2021 11:21:26 PM
Early Times Report

Ladakh, Feb 7: Global Himalayan Expeditions (GHE) recently electrified the lesser-known village of Dungti near the Line of Actual Control between India and China on the Nyoma-Demchok circuit in Ladakh. In 1962, numerous Tibetans families migrated to Ladakh and settled in Dungti. These Tibetans are pashmina herders and their only source of livelihood is through the sale of fine-quality Pashmina wool. These villagers have been guarding the Indian frontier with China for decades. However, the village has never been electrified and the villagers have been living in darkness since 1962. Similarly, the village only has three toilets and requires more holistic development on all fronts.
Some progress was made on the night of 4 February, 2021. A local team of engineers from GHE comprising spent three days in the freezing temperature of -25 degree Celsius to bring electricity to the 51 households in this Tibetan village. GHE has electrified more than 100 village hamlets in Ladakh over the last eight years using solar-based DC electricity with Dungti being the latest beneficiary. This was done through the efforts of various supporters under the Corporate Social Responsibility. In Dungti, every household received a solar nano grid with three LED lights and two LED batons along with USB charging facilities. In total the village now has a 8.6 kW setup. This included 10 solar LED street lightsin public spaces.
The GHE team included two Ladakh women engineers who have been trained by the company. These engineers have been instrumental in providing electricity to more than 50 villages over the last five years.
The electrification of Dungti village is important as it brings development to this border region, which will boost national security while also providing residents with modern amenities and preventing migration to urban areas.
GHE Chief Operating Officer, Jaideep Bansal explained, “GHE has been focusing on development of remote villages in Leh, Kargil and Zangskar over the past seven to eight years. Development is reaching many areas and villages are becoming better connected. It is important to also focus on villages such as Dungti that was otherwise using diesel generators. Now they have access to clean electricity thanks to support from our CSR partners and the UT administration of Ladakh.”
